Obituary of Marjorie Hines Burke

Mrs. Marjorie Hines Burke, daughter of the late Charles Henry Hines and Sallie Wyche Hines, was

born Marjorie Josephine Hines in Washington, D.C. on August 5, 1924, and entered into peaceful rest on

November 21, 2020. She was the second to the oldest of four children born to that union, including

brothers Charles Henry, Jr., William Thomas, and sister Sallie Delores, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Burke was a devoted member of the Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church where she also

served as Deacon since 2014. Prior to joining Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church, she was a member of

the Historic Berean Baptist Church, formerly Berean Baptist Church, for more than 70 years. During this

time, she served as President of the Gideon Club for approximately 35 years, Deaconess, member of the

Missionary Club, Secretary of the Historic Bereanites Club, choir member and Sunday School Teacher.

Her love of God, the church and its members were exemplified through her joyful and dedicated service.

Mrs. Burke received her early education in the District of Columbia Public Schools and graduated

from Dunbar Senior High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Miner Teachers

College and her Master of Arts degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from New York

University. She completed further study in Administration with more than thirty credits beyond the MA

degree from Howard, American and New York Universities.

Mrs. Burke was united in marriage to Nelson S. Burke in 1951, thereby establishing a bond

unbroken for more than 60 years. To that union were born two daughters, Linda Gayle and Tanya

Gwen. Mr. Burke predeceased her in 2012.

Professionally, Mrs. Burke's educational career spanned more than 63 years, during which her lifelong

passion for teaching children and her commitment to excellence in Education were realized and

rewarded. She served as a loving and dedicated teacher for 36 years in the D.C. Public Schools. She also

served as Assistant Professor of Education at Miner Teachers College, Supervisor in the Department of

Supervision and Instruction, Acting Principal of Shaed Open Space School and Cook Elementary Schools, Principal of Gibbs Elementary Summer School, Instructor of Adult Education Evening School at Ft. Lincoln Community School and Director and teacher at the Horning Brothers Learning Academic Center summer programs. After retiring from the D.C. Public Schools, her love of children led her to continue her service as the Director and a teacher at the Jewels of Ann Private Day School for 17 years, and later as Division Director of Early Childhood and Childcare Programs for the Associates for Renewal in Education (A.R.E.). Understanding the importance of science in today's highly technical world, Mrs. Burke was then inspired to accept the challenge in 2000 to become one of four co-founders and the Director and teacher at the Washington Science and Technology Academy, where she served until 2007.

She then joined the team of "Everybody Wins", a national children's literacy and mentoring program, where she served as a School Coordinator. She found new challenges when she accepted the position of Family Group Leader and Early Childhood Coach in the Kids House of the Community Academy Public Charter School, later named Champions Learning Program.

Ever the loving teacher, she found tremendous joy in her frequent chance encounters over the years with former students, who remembered her kind and caring instruction and often credited her with their life success stories! These success stories, she'd often say, were the real rewards of her life's work!

With a zest for life and abundant energy, she also devoted her time to several organizations, which

included the National Education Association (NEA), The DC Retired Educators Association(DCREA) and

its monthly book club; the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) - where she

attended annual conferences throughout the U.S. and Canada; the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa,

Inc., Beta Chapter; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Les Girls and Wings for Joy, Inc. For the last 5 five years,

along with her niece, Charla Glass, she proudly served the Shepherd Park Chapter 2667 of AARP as its

Corresponding Secretary. Her interests and hobbies included drama, choral speaking and writing. With an

open heart to discovery and adventure, Mrs. Burke loved to travel and enjoyed many cruises and trips to

Bermuda, Mexico, Hawaii and the Caribbean, where she even dared to try scuba diving!

Radiance, effervescence, optimism, kindness, patience and generosity were just a few of the many

"Margie" traits that made her a sparkling ray of sunshine in the lives of her family, friends, colleagues and

students! With always a kind word of encouragement, or a loving act, she inspired, uplifted and brightened

the lives of so many! She never said "no" to a friend in need or missed an opportunity to lend a helping

hand. Her children and their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family will forever

hold her lovingly in their hearts and remember her countless teachings of a life well-lived.

Mrs. Burke leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Linda Johnson and Tanya Hall, one

devoted son-in-law Samuel Markus Hall, her sister-in law, Mrs. Emma Wilson; six granddaughters,

Jamilah Johnson, Kadijah Johnson, Tatiana Moton, Sydney Alexis Hall, Emma Johnson, and Candace

Johnson; three grandsons, Samuel Markus Hall, Jr., Gabriel Johnson, and Nicholas Johnson; four great

granddaughters, Jamilah, Nevaeh, Neriah and Trinity, two great grandsons, Isaiah and Jonah; six nieces,

Ret. Ambassador Cynthia Akuetteh, Mrs. Charla Glass, Mrs. Laura Stanton, Mrs. Donna Butler, Mrs.

Varnetta Davis and Mrs. Caryn Wyles; two nephews - Richard Archie and Gary Hines, and a host of

loving relatives and friends.

Her family celebrates her wonderful life - her selfless nature, her unfailing example of abundant

love, her devotion to God, family and friends and her enthusiasm for living life fully and fearlessly.
