

Portia Cecelia Ware was born in Washington, D.C. on July 24, 1933 to George S. and Portia L. Ware, and baptized at Turner Memorial AME Church. She was educated in the D.C. Public Schools where she graduated from Dunbar High School in 1951, and later graduated from Miner Teachers College. She briefly taught in the D.C. Public Schools and worked as a secretary at the Pentagon.
She enjoyed reading, gardening, playing the piano, bowling, dancing, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and caring for and pampering the variety of dogs that she owned. She was an avid Bullets/Wizards fan, and enjoyed serving her community as a member of the Eckington Civic Association. She also served at Turner as an assistant to her mother with the Cub Scouts, and with the SHARE Program. She was an award-winning Avon Lady for over 38 years.
She was loved and admired by all who had the good fortune of knowing her and will be remembered as one of the most interesting, knowledgeable, and kindest women who ever lived. All who knew her, especially her loving family, truly enjoyed time spent with Portia and will miss her conversations on a vast number of topics. She had a great sense of style and humor, and her wit and wisdom will not be forgotten. She was a remarkable woman who was very much loved, and will be sorely missed.
He is survived by her daughter, Denise A. Brown; her bother George R. (Barbara); her niece Nancy L. Ware-Johnson; her nephews Norman R. and Douglas L. Ware; great niece Breah, and great nephews Jerome and Douglas, as well as a host of other loving relatives, neighbors, and friends.
