Rebecca Haynes Buckmon the oldest child of the late George Haynes Sr. and Mary Anna Smith Haynes was born on November 23, 1935 in Calhoun County, South Carolina. She departed this life, Monday, December 6, 2021 at her home in Washington, D.C.
Affectionately known as “Kitty" or “Becky” by her family and friends while growing up, she married the late Wyndell Buckmon Sr. in March of 1954 and together they had three sons Wendell, Kenneth and Brian. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ early in her life and raised her family with strong Christian values.
Rebecca relocated to Washington, DC in 1955 and began working as a server at the White House. She later went on to work as a day care provider at Bethlehem Baptist Day Care. Rebecca’s passion for caring for those in need of health care prompted her to receive training and certification as a nurse’s assistant and she worked as an independent home aide for over a decade. In 2000 she later joined United Planning Organization (UPO) working at the Kenilworth Recreation Center (now known as East River Family Strengthening Collaboration) in their KEEN Senior Program as a nutrition aide from which she retired in 2005.
Rebecca has always had a servant's heart and was a proud and dedicated member of the National Council of Negro Women, DC Section 2. As a member Rebecca made sure to introduce her granddaughters to the events and activities hosted by NCNW such as the annual and nationally known Black Family Reunion and Christmas Parties for children.
A lover of plants and flowers, Rebecca had the greenest thumb around, and was often known to start a plant from nothing. She was a member of the Eastland Gardens Flower Club and happily contributed clippings from her personal garden for the organization’s annual community flower and plant sale.
Rebecca wanted to be remembered as an honest, strong, God-fearing woman that loved her family and gardens. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving son Wendell Buckmon, Jr. and daughter-in-law Rene Buckmon, one sister Nettie H. Shuler, one brother Ben Hanes; four granddaughters Dominique, Lauren, Morgan and Manique and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends that she loved dearly. Rebecca was preceded in death by sons Kenneth Steven Buckmon and Brian Matthew Buckmon.
