He graduated from Bladensburg High School with training as a machinist in 1956. He held several jobs as a machinist before going to work at Georgetown University. He was employed there in the Physics Department machine shop for 33 years before retiring in 1995.
He met the love of his life, Mary Ottey, May 31, 1957, and married her three months later on September 20, 1957. They would have celebrated 66 years of marriage this year. They lived in Maryland locales: Cheverly, Landover Hills, Riva and moved in July to Columbia to join houses with their daughter, Kelly and her husband.

Richard and Mary received Christ as their Savior in 1972 and for the rest of his life Dick was a passionate follower of Christ. He attended Landover Hills Baptist Church and grew as a Christian under Carmon Hartsfield, his pastor.
Richard had a strong desire for studying the Bible and would spend hours in study. He and Mary both took Adult Education classes at Washington Bible College. He became a Bible teacher at Landover Hills Baptist Church and after he moved to Riva, He was a teacher at churches where he was a member in the Annapolis area: Weems Creek, Edgewater and South Shore. He had hundreds of Bible study books and CD’s to use on his computer.
He had many interests and hobbies. He was a mechanical person. In the ‘70’s he rebuilt Volkswagen engines and automobiles for his own use and to sell. He worked on the buses at Landover Hills Baptist Church when they had a bus ministry.
He had a strong interest in satellite transmission of TV signals when he lived in Riva, Md. He would climb on the roof to adjust the dish with a small TV in his hands.
An interest that he had for a long time was personal computers. He bought his first computer in the late 1980’s. He found out that there was a Linux operating system and was a strong proponent of it. He usually had two or three on his tables that were hooked up. He would install programs and use them for enjoyment. One way he used the computer was to organize his Bible lesson for his Sunday School class. He set computers up for Mary to sell items on eBay and to use for on-line banking.
He was an artist using airbrushes. Another interest was in home repair and building. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t build or fix.
He was adventurous. He owned and loved Harley Davidson motorcycles. He went up in single engine airplanes and went down in caves.
But most of all, He would do things that helped Mary do what she wanted. When Mary sold jewelry, he became a jeweler and designer/repair person for jewelry.
