
Viola Beatrice Poindexter the daughter of the late Elder Robert Lee Quarles and Mary Lou Quarles was born on January 7, 1938, in Orange, Virginia. After a brief illness, she transitioned into eternal rest on February 15, 2026.
Viola grew up knowing Jesus Christ and accepted him as her Lord and Saviour. She attended Shady Grove Baptist Church, Orange, Virginia; Peach Grove Baptist Church, Louisa, Virginia and later upon moving to the District of Columbia, she faithfully attended First Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church where her faith continued to grow.
Viola moved to the District of Columbia and attended Francis Junior High School. She decided to leave school to take care of her elderly father. She later met the love of her life, the late David I. Poindexter, whom she married in August 1966. She was a loving mother of four children, Dr. Mary Quarles-Grant, Dolly Quarles-Sullivan, Inette Poindexter and James L. Poindexter, Sr.
Viola worked at Columbia Hospital for Women as a nurse assistant and then later at the Florida Avenue Grill as a waitress until she retired. She loved to cook, listen to music, dance, watch sports and her favorite game show Family Feud with Steve Harvey, and every Sunday morning she watched Sunday morning service live on YouTube.
Upon the transition of her daughter Inette Poindexter, she went to live with her son James and his family until her passing.
Viola was preceded in death, her spouse David I. Poindexter; siblings Elaine Quarles-Woolfolk, Taylor R. Quarles, Mack and Zack Quarles and Bernard O. Quarles; children Dr. Mary Quarles-Grant, Dolly Quarles-Sullivan and Inette Poindexter. She leaves to cherish her memories, her son James L. Poindexter, Sr, (Donna), two granddaughters Teyonna E. Herring and Jasmine C. Grant, one grandson James L. Poindexter, Jr., one step-granddaughter Nadia R. Ratliff, step-grandson Antoine M. Ratliff (Crystal), four step-great grandchildren Nadiya, Madison, Shavawn and Marqui; nieces, nephews and a host of other family members and friends.
Visitation will be held at First Rising Mt Zion Baptist, 602 N St NW, Washington, DC 20001, on March 6, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a Celebration of Life at the same location on March 6, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.
Committal will take place at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 BLADENSBURG RD, BRENTWOOD, MD 20722, on March 6, 2026, from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
