Connie Marcus was born in Olean, New York in October 1943 to Gladys (Lax) Marcus and Benjamin Marcus. Her grandfather, H. W. Marcus, had founded the synagogue in their small town in upstate New York.
She studied education at Boston University, spending a year in Florence and graduating in 1965, and married her first husband, Robert Brothers, in 1967, giving birth to their daughter Cammy Rebecca in 1969.
Connie taught for several years in Boston, in Chicago, and eventually in Iowa City, where she raised Cammy and found a vibrant Jewish community centered around the university there.
By chance, Connie met the director of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop who was impressed by her kindness, intelligence, energy and wit, and he hired her to become the program associate of the workshop, a job she held for 45 years. She spent that time advising students, coordinating lectures and readings, working with faculty, and nurturing several generations of writers, including people such as John Irving, Ray Carver, Jorie Graham, James Alan McPherson, Marilynn Robinson and many others.
When she retired in 2019, 150 hundred writers from around the world gathered to honor her. (A few of their tributes can be seen on Youtube by going to “Connie Brothers Retirement Event”). She took pleasure in her grandchildren, the home, orchard, and garden she created with her second husband, William Bulger, and her many close friends. She moved to Brookline in 2021 to be closer to her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Cammy, her sister Marcia, her son in law, Abhi, and her grandchildren, Aadi, Liela, and Zuriel.
