Dear Laura, Robert and Amy:

I belong to an Israeli peace and conflict organization in Jerusalem.  A couple of years ago I was having breakfast at a hotel in DC, where I had flown in for the JStreet conference.  Who waltzed up to me, pulled up a chair, made some flattering comment about why she had eyed me across the room, and within minutes struck up both a conversation and a friendship.  A sort of platonic seduction in less than a minute.

The rest of those days, your mom and I walked together (well, I mostly ran to keep up with your mom) to the conference in the morning, past the townhouses, amid the frothy whirl of April blossoms. Between that euphoric bloom of nature that is spring in DC, the inspiration of the conference, and your mom's vim and sparkle, I simply felt...well, happy.

I'm always a little sleep deprived and off balance when taking these short trips abroad and there was also something so warm and comforting about being with your mom.  Something calming about her presence while at the same time exciting.

Your mom would later call me up to make a dinner date in Tel Aviv while on a visit here.  Naturally we had a great visit though something about being here in Israel, on the ground, lent a bit of sobriety to our time together. I still remember putting her in a cab. Today, having searched for her online to see if she was still involved with Hadassah, I learned that it was the last time I would see your mom.  I knew Enid Shapiro over a period of months and yet I was devastated.

Your mom had all the grace, charm, warmth and wits of the grand dames of society - but without the slightest measure of pretense or vanity.  She quite simply was in love with people and inherently drawn to doing good and it made for a captivating combination. 

How crushed am I that I lost contact with herand how graced to have known her for even a little while.  I send my deepest regrets for your loss.  God knows Edith couldn't help but touch everyone she met so I am reassured to know that she will live on, with gusto, through the lives of her children.

My husband and i live in Kansas.  We met Enid and Mel on an excursion boat off of Ambergris Quay back in the '90s.  Enid and i stayed in touch irregularly for the past 20 years.   She was gracious enough to offer my daughter overnight hospitality during a visit to Tufts.  We saw each other again in August 2012 (photo attached), when Mark and i finally traveled to Boston.  Enid had us over for tea.  She made us feel like family.  At that time and always, she talked about how she felt, what she was doing, what was important.  She inspired by her example of thoughtful and generous acts.  I hope someone sees this, so her family will know what a wide swath she cut.  On this, her birthday, know that she is remembered with affection.  Our sincere condolences to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, a couple of whom, as it turns out, are related to us by marriage -- which is how we learned of Enid's passing.

Enid was a role model for a life well lived.

Enid had a full life up to the end.  She was totally committed to her Jewish and professional life.  It was my honor to know and work with her as a colleague and compatriot for over 35 years in both of these worlds.  My sincerest sympathy to her family.  May her name forever be for a blessing.

Just three years ago, Enid and I met at the newly formed Sisterhood of Salaam-Shalom, a Muslim and Jewish women's group devoted to cross-cultural understanding and friendship. 
Her impressive energy, intelligence, welcoming spirit and interest in others, accompanied by her feistiness and strong opinions while simultaneously being open to considering the views of others, impressed me. 
What she projected was always an interest in who you were, what you thought and what you were about. She set people at ease and conveyed a spirit of welcome to and genuine interest in them. While she will remain in my thoughts as a role model and be an inspiration to me to engage in the world as I age, I value our connection and will miss her.

We met Enid and Mel in the '90s during a vacation in Belize.  We remained in contact ever since, and we finally got to Brookline for a visit in 2013.  Prior to that, however, having only met us once, she nonetheless agreed to house our daughter when she visited Tufts.  Our hearts go out to her family at this sad time, although her loss will be felt by many.  Remembering her goodness, we are

Enid epitomized the concept of perpetual motion. Never one to,sit still, she always had plans for trips or new projects. We always enjoyed our encounters. RIP

Enid was a great lady and it was my pleasure to have known her. She battled health issues for many years with dignity, grace and determination. She loved her family and her many friends. She was a true force of nature and I will remember her fondly. With deepest sympathy,

We are so sad to hear of Enid's passing.  What a dedicated social worker, mom, older sister and classy and sophisticated cousin!

Like many of my generation of the "2nd cousins," I grew up hearing oral history treasures from my mother, cousin Glenna Robinson Mazel, enjoying fun and feisty memories with her Lesser cousins at Nantasket beach in the 1930's and 1940's.  They surely got their chutzpah from their strong Grandmother Fanny lesser.  They certainly forged key ties for generations to come.  

Sharp and witty, cousin Enid always contributed to insightful conversation.  She was so proud of her children and grandchildren. 
She will be missed.

I had the luck to meet you 3 times (Boston, our home Tel Aviv , and Haifa).
Each time was special ,each time was memorable , as if we always knew one another. You were special , fighter, giver, with a spirit of a teenager.
I am almost sure that you are going to start reorganize things up there and make it even  better :)

When I Googled ENID SHAPIRO I discovered more and more about this amazing woman and her talent of relationships, of bringing people together. I hope she read all these entities and realized how much she was admired, respected, appreciated and loved, because she can no longer read these obituaries. The latter are for her close family and for the very many old and young whose lives she touched with her magic wand of friendship and caring and sense of humour.
She literally took our family under her wing 50 years ago, and during these 50 years our paths crossed time and again, in Israel and in Boston. We loved Enid deeply and did our best to let her know it. We shall always cherish her memory.
May she rest in peace.

My parents, Marshall and Charlotte Lebowitz, admired and loved their dear friends, the Shapiros.  Mel and my Dad talked business, Enid and my mother talked social work, and I remember all of them committed to and involved with various aspects of the suburban and greater Boston area Jewish community.  Enid was a remarkable woman and Mom sends her deepest condolences, as do I and my family.

Enid, sweetie, wherever you are now, please know that you were really too amazing to even be a model for me. You were unquenchably passionate, curious and appreciative, with the energy of five normal people. The image of you we will always carry will inspire us all to get up, get out there, and live.

Enid was a true "Grande Dame" I had the privilege to know well. Her compassion, wisdom, free spirit and humor will continue to inspire and guide me.

Enid was one of the most amazing people I have ever met, or will ever meet. One could go through the alphabet several times naming all the places she has traveled to around the world.It would also be impossible to count all the people whose lives she has touched and improved through her kindness, caring and generosity. To say she will be missed is an understatement. I am honored to have known and worked with this tireless and inspirational woman. - Elaine Lowenstein

Enid and I were Co-Chairs of the Hadassah Health Committee for years and put on some programs together. She was always so upbeat and modern. I shall miss her beautiful smile and fighting spirit!
