It is with sadness that we announce the death of a brilliant neurochemist and respected colleague, George Hauser, PhD., professor emeritus of psychiatry at McLean, who passed away early September 28, 2012, at the age of 89.
Dr. Hauser was recruited by Jordi Folch-Pi, MD, in 1957 to establish a free-standing program at the McLean Hospital Research Laboratory on the metabolism of brain complex lipids. He was an established and highly-regarded neurochemist with research interests in the roles of glycolipids and phospholipids in the nervous system, and his research efforts resulted in substantial contributions to our knowledge concerning the distribution, metabolism, and functions of these substances.
From 1983-1993, Dr. Hauser served as the interim director of the Ralph Lowell Laboratories in the Mailman Research Center from 1983 to 1993. In 1985 he was promoted to Professor of Psychiatry (Biochemistry) at Harvard Medical School, and has been in emeritus status since 1993. In 2001, Dr. Hauser received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class, for his research in neurochemistry. The hospital’s success in building a viable research program was, in no small measure, due to George’s scientific, academic, and administrative contributions and his more than 50 years of dedicated service.
George was a U.S. Veteran of World War II. He received the highest recognition, Legion d'Honneur, in 2008 from the French Government for his participation in the Liberation of Normandy, he received a purple heart and a bronze star.
The Memorial service will take place on Thursday, October 11 at 2 p.m. at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline.
Visiting at his late residence following the service.
Donations may be made in his memory to the Newton Community Service Center, 492 Waltham Street, West Newton, MA 02465.
