Irene Diller of North Bellmore, NY, passed away on February 25 at the age of ninety-two. She was born, on November 23, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY. She was a first-generation American, and was the only daughter of Sylvia and Isadore Grandier. She had three older half-brothers, Jack, Lou and Albert.
Irene graduated from Brooklyn College with a bachelor’s degree in Education, and went on to teach first grade for more than 30 years in North Bellmore, NY. Her classrooms were creative spaces, where children were encouraged to explore and play, and embrace the joy of learning. She received her master’s degree from Brooklyn College, and completed (all-but-dissertation) doctoral studies in Education. She was proud to become a professor of education, at SUNY Stonybrook and Molloy College, sharing her skills, wisdom and experience with future teachers.
Irene was an artist and creatively collaged color and pattern across paintings, spaces, clothing and drawings. She was known for her intelligence, sense of humor and beautiful smile.
She was a loving wife and partner to her husband of over 65 years, Meyer Diller, who passed away in 2018. They built a family on Odell St. in North Bellmore, a suburb of NYC. They were both teachers, so many happy summers were spent with their children at Camp Cummings -- where she led arts and crafts and he ran the waterfront activities. In later years, the family traveled together across the United States, camping and seeing the National Parks. Irene and Meyer were consummate New Yorkers, attending concerts, Broadway shows, Opera and museums. They always knew the best places to eat (and where to park).
Irene was the loving mother of Edward, Lisa, and Susan and mother-in-law to Ann Diller and Donald Bloch. Irene was Beemie to her grandchildren, Becky, Danny, Sam, Emily and Lena. She taught her children and grandchildren the importance of living well and living kindly.
