Dear family of James, I worked in the office next to James's for a number of years at the Channing Lab (and also was fortunate enough to attend his 40th birthday fest, which he planned as a huge treat for his friends--and it was indeed fabulous). James was a constant source of good humor and took a sincere interest in the lives of those around him. He was a fine person who loved life and lived it well. I'm awfully sorry to hear that he has passed. Wishing you comfort at this time of sudden loss.

You and your family are in my prayers. James will be greatly missed at our Harvard class of '76 events. As I am sure you know, he was very proud of you and the children and your many accomplishments.

Dear Sherri, Thomas, Sara, David, Laura, Melanie, Sam, Ben, and Zachary,


   I am here in Houston where I just opened my email to learn of James' passing.  Corey, Michelle, Dani, and I want you to know how much we loved and adored James; how we all can't bare to think of the terrible shock and grief and despair you must be experiencing at this time.  Ironically, Corey, who turned 70 yesterday, can't fly yet because of his broken neck and resulting surgery, and I am grounded because of my recent bout of diverticulitis.  Yet, I will come whenever you deem it appropriate because like everyone who knew James, he was one of the most special, courageous, humorous, brilliant, and multi-talented men who ever lived and we want to honor his life in any way that we can.  James was a culinary master, knowledgeable, erudite, cultured, musically and artistically talented, who took time to talk to everyone (including my own children) with sage advice and kindness.   He faced every challenge, medical and otherwise, with bravery, valor, pluck, and the acceptance of conditions he could not change. To my entire family, his deeds, medical contributions, personal attributes, and skills made an indelible impression upon all who were honored to know him.

    I just want to tell you all how often James expressed to me on the phone his great love for each of you and how grateful he felt for your love and support through his illnesses and all of his life.  He talked continually about David's engagement to Laura; how Sam was doing so well in medical school; and how proud he was of Melanie and her career.   He must have talked for ten minutes of his great love for Sherry and how she and all of you were the best part of his life.  He thought of Thomas as not just his brother, but as his best friend.  Recently, he was very tearful on the phone over how much he missed Uncle Bob and my heart went out to him.  My biggest prayer is that now James has somehow reunited with the spirit of Uncle Bob and Aunt Joan and together they are without pain and listening to a beautiful opera and dancing among the stars!

         You are all my beloved cousins and the only family that I have left.  My sincerest condolences and prayers go out to you all during this difficult time.  Please let Linda, Corey, Michelle, Dani, and I know how we can help in any way and feel free to visit us in Houston or San Diego anytime if you want to get away.

 James will live on in our hearts and minds forever!
