SHULMAN, Lillian (Greenglass) – of Brookline. Entered into rest March 16, 2013 at the age of 89 years. She was the beloved wife of the late Abraham Shulman. Dear daughter of the late David & Sadie (Lipson) Greenglass. Devoted mother of Michael Shulman & his wife Andrea Richman of Newton, Robert Shulman & his wife Sherry of Brookline and Richard Shulman & his wife Constance of Franklin. Loving sister of the late Evelyn Freedman. Cherished grandmother of Jennifer, David, Jonathan, Carl, and Natalia. Beloved aunt of Judith Caplan & her husband Barry.
She grew up in Dorchester with her parents and older sister Evelyn. At the age of 4, Lillian contracted polio, resulting in significant damage to one leg, on which she later had 2 operations at Children’s Hospital. Lillian’s parents always encouraged her to succeed in spite of her disability. In Dorchester, her father was a member of the Nightingale Street Shul. Shortly after she graduated from high school, Lillian’s family moved to Brookline. Lillian attended business school and began working as an office manager.
Through her sister, Lillian met Abe Shulman, and they were married in 1944. Their first son, Michael, was born 4 years later, followed by Robert and Richard. The family joined Temple Sinai in the early 1950’s. Lillian quickly became active, helping create the religious school’s first PTO and serving as its second president. She was asked to be on the temple board, became a vice-president, and then president, the first woman in Temple Sinai’s history to hold that office. After 4 years as Temple Sinai president, Lillian became active in the Synagogue Council of Massachusetts. She was president of that organization for 2 years and then on its board for 6 years. Lillian also served in the CJP board.
When Lillian’s youngest child was in nursery school, she began volunteering at Children’s Hospital as a way to repay that institution for the care she received as a youngster. She was recently honored by Children’s as one of their longest serving volunteers.
Lillian remained active in Temple Sinai as assistant treasurer and a member of many committees. Her commitment to the temple and to Judaism was a fundamental part of her life.
