Born in Berlin, Germany on October 18, 1926, Marcelle immigrated to the United States after World War II. In 1954, Marcelle graduated magna cum laude from Columbia University with a B.A. in History and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society. In 1990 -- after raising two children and in her 60s -- Marcelle earned a Master’s Degree from Harvard University. Her thesis won that year’s Thomas Small Prize for Excellence. In 2007, Marcelle published a comprehensive biography of archeologist and scholar Frank Calvert entitled, Schliemann's Silent Partner: Frank Calvert (1828-1908) Pioneer, Scholar and Survivor, which the Bryn Mawr Classical Review called “an essential asset for all those interested in the historiography of scholarship in the Troad [the region surrounding the site of Troy].” Marcelle was married to Boston lawyer, Robert Robinson for 62 years. Marcelle is survived by Robert, her sons, David A. Robinson and Steven H. Robinson, her daughter-in-law, Jennifer Robinson, and two granddaughters, Sonya Shea Robinson and Ming Eleanore Robinson, all residents of New York City.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donation in Marcelle’s memory to the MSPCA-Angell (https://www.mspca.org/donate-now/), where she and Robert found and adopted their beloved cat, Blimpie.
There will be a graveside service at the Crawford St. Memorial Park, 776 Baker Street, West Roxbury, Massachusetts, at 12 noon on February 16, 2018.
