

Marilyn (Mayburg) Barron, of Boston, died on March 11, 2012 after long illness. She was 88 years old. She was a proud graduate of Wellesley College and Simmons College School of Social Work where she received an MSW degree. She maintained close ties to each institution throughout her life. Marilyn was a psychiatric social worker with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. For the remainder of her career Marilyn was a Supervisor in the Homemaker Service Department of Family Service Association of Greater Boston. Marilyn trained and supervised social workers and also did direct counseling. During her long career Marilyn provided comfort and assistance to countless numbers of people with mental health problems. Marilyn was an active and avid volunteer. She was a consumer member of the Health Planning Council for Greater Boston; she was the consumer member of Massachusetts Board of Registration of Pharmacy; she worked as a volunteer in the mammography department of Brigham and Women’s Hospital; she was on the Statutory Adviser Committee chaired by the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind; she was a member of the board of Central Boston Elder Services; she was a tour guide at the Boston Public Library; she was a greeter and gallery guide for the Old State House.
Marilyn had a passion for travel. She traveled extensively in the United States and to many destinations all over the world. She learned a great deal from her travels and thoroughly enjoyed each trip.
After the premature death of her husband Julian in 1954, Marilyn lived the rest of her life as a single woman but she was not alone. She maintained active and loving relationships with the three generations of cousins who survive her. Marilyn was independent, resourceful and resilient but she was also kind, generous and charitable. She took care of herself but she took good care of many others as well. Marilyn lived a long and happy life doing mostly what she enjoyed doing. She will be missed by many.
Graveside services at Ohabei Shalom Cemetery, 150 Wordsworth St., East Boston on Wednesday, March 14 at 11:00am. Following the burial, family and friends are invited to return to the Library at Temple Ohabei Shalom from 12:30-2:30pm
