It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Michael “Mickey” B. Frish, a brilliant physicist, devoted family man, and beloved friend, who left us on March 5, 2025 at 71 years old. A holder of 11 patents and the author or coauthor of over 80 technical reports and publications, his remarkable contributions to the field of photonics helped shape our understanding of the universe and inspired the next generation of scientists.
Born on November 8, 1953 in Newark, New Jersey, Mickey displayed an early passion for science and discovery, leading him to Cornell University, where he earned his undergraduate, masters, and doctorate degrees. Over a distinguished career spanning nearly five decades, he helped spearhead research in the field of spectroscopy, earning recognition from colleagues worldwide. He was considered a pioneer in the development of gas detection and analytic instruments. His work at Physical Sciences, Inc., where he spent the vast majority of his career, not only advanced science, but allowed him to mentor the next generation of physicists and engineers, including his daughter Julie, to his immense pride.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mickey was a man of profound intellect, curiosity, and kindness. He found joy in his work, in challenging his mind, and, before he became a father, in piloting his Cessna aircraft. He was always eager to share his love of his interests with those around him, most especially his wife of 39 years, Susan, whom he absolutely adored and helped give her the life she always deserved. And he was eager to share in the interests of others, too, for instance, growing to love the game of hockey by way of his love for his son, Zachary, who took a deep interest in the sport. Mickey was an essential source of wisdom and stability for his family; to his colleagues, he was an unwavering source of support.
Mickey is survived by Susan, Julie, and Zachary, as well his older brother Clifford and his beloved cousins. His soul joins his mother Myrna, father Norman, and younger brother Andrew, all of whom predeceased him.
He will be dearly missed but forever remembered for his brilliance, generosity, and the legacy he leaves behind with respect to both the science he loved and those whose lives he touched.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 11, beginning at 11 a.m. at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel (1668 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA), where friends, family, and colleagues are invited to celebrate his extraordinary life.
