
Muriel was born on January 8, 1932 to William and Rose Silverman in Brooklyn, New York.
She is survived by her son Bill Kannel and his wife Marla Kannel of Wellesley; daughter Anne Kirsch and her husband Mark Kirsch of Fairfield, Connecticut; son Craig Kannel and his wife Becky Mazur of Amherst; daughter Susan Kannel of Silver Spring, Maryland; step-daughter Pam Lucas and her husband John Nealon of Glastonbury, CT; step-daughter Stephanie Lucas and her husband Kerbey Altmann of Burlingame, CA; step-son Jeffrey Lucas and his wife Margaret Leidler of Belmont; and her brother, Jerry Silverman of Newton. She was the adoring and proud grandmother of Joe Kannel, Alex Kannel, Ben Kannel, Alison Kirsch, Emily Kirsch, Charlie Kannel, Ethan Kannel, Jared Kannel, Kevin Nealon, Josh Nealon, Kendra Nealon, Thomas Altmann, James Altmann, Eleanor Lucas, and Stephen Lucas. Muriel was preceded in death by her loving husbands, Charles Kannel and Dr. Jason Lucas.
Muriel raised her family in Lexington, MA, and lived there for 48 years. In 2010 she moved to Lasell Village in Auburndale; she greatly enjoyed the Lasell Village community and made many close friends there.
Muriel worked as a computer programmer at MIT in the 1970s and 80s and subsequently spent many years as a senior systems analyst at the Mitre Corporation. She had a Bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College and an MBA from Northeastern University. Muriel was passionate about literature, the theater, tennis, and, above all, travel.
She was hiking in Bali, Indonesia when she had a heart attack, complications of which lead to her death in Singapore some weeks later. Her children were at her side during her illness.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 11:00 at Temple Isaiah, 55 Lincoln St., Lexington. Burial in Westview Cemetery, Lexington.
Shiva will be held at the following times: Monday, June 8th, from immediately after internment to 4:00pm at Lasell Village, 120 Seminary Ave. in Auburndale; Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, June 8th through 10th, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm at the home of Bill and Marla Kannel.
