Muriel Wolf Landay passed away on July 27, 2025, her 87th birthday, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Though she was much reduced by her illness, we remember her as she was. A poised and stylish presence, always well dressed, with such a keen eye for fashion that she stumbled into a career as an interior decorator, of everything from suburban homes to downtown law offices. A card shark whose broad smile disguised a competitive streak and a card-counter’s memory that she brought to a thousand games of gin and bridge. A tireless reader, never without a book, who filled room after room with the books she devoured. She was loyal and loving, gathering wonderful friends around her that she kept from childhood to the very end of her life, a loving circle with whom she chatted and gossiped and laughed for many years. She loved dogs, particularly an enormous Great Dane named Major, with whom she shared a passion for ice cream, eaten right out of the quart container. More than anything, she loved her family. She was never happier than when she sat at a dinner table surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Muriel Landay was born in Boston in 1938. She graduated from Brookline High School in 1956 and Tufts University in 1960. She was the daughter of Harry and Lillian Wolf, the mother of Bruce Landay (Nancy), William Landay (Susan) and Suzanne Robinson (Andrew), and proud grandmother of Hannah, Ben, Sophie, Sam, Ted and Henry.
