

LOEWENSTEIN, Phyllis (Goldberg) of Newton died unexpectedly on December 14, 2014 at age 79. She was the daughter of the late Louis Goldberg and Shirley (Wald) Goldberg. She leaves her husband of 53 years, Ernest Loewenstein; two daughters Janet Loewenstein of Wellfleet, MA, & Sarah Fanger of Mayfield Heights, Ohio; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Samantha Fanger. Phyllis attended Brookline High School and graduated with a Master’s in Education from Boston University where she studied speech pathology. She was the director of the speech clinic at Boston University for six years followed by several years of coordinating the clinical placement of speech students. Phyllis spent eleven years as a clinical social worker for the Depart. of Correction at MCI Norfolk. Following that, Phyllis became the director of International Adoptions, Inc (now Wide Horizons for Children), where she proudly helped create hundreds of multi-racial families. Upon leaving that job, Phyllis conducted a private counseling service for ten years until her retirement. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 19, 2014 at Stanetsky Memorial Chapels, 1668 Beacon Street, BROOKLINE at 2 PM. Immediately following services family and friends are invited to her home until 5 PM. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Phyllis’s memory may be made to Combined Jewish Philanthropies or to a charity of your choice.
