Dear Mrs. Miller and Family, I am sorry to learn of your loss. I was a Consumer Safety Officer in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition when Dr. Miller was the Center Director. Dr. Miller was a mentor to me. He gave me an assignment in the mid-1980s that became my career until I retired in 2006 to help the Center ensure that foods developed via modern biotechnology would be safe for consumers. Dr. Miller served as Chairman of the first FAO/ WHO workshop on food biotechnology, and I had the honor of working with him during that meeting. As in all things he did, his scientific expertise, ability to listen to diverse views, and sense of humor were invaluable. I regret that I cannot be present for the Memorial Service but my thoughts will be with you. I remember Sandy with great fondnes and respect.  James Maryanski, Tokyo, Japan

Dr. Miller was my Adviser during my years at M.I.T., 1973-1979. I very much enjoyed his teaching and advise. In particular his sense of humor, openness, respect for the cultural and religious differences. Today, in retrospective I miss him very much, and I hope I could have another of his enthusiastic classes. My warmest thoughts for his lovely wife and girls.

Dear Miller Farmily, I am an IT Specialist, who has been working at CFSAN since 1984.   Dr. Miller (A"H), has always been a shining star for the CFSAN family.  He was always friendly and smiling and uplifted my day, when I would run into him in the cafeteria, the hallway, or other places at FB-8.  He didn't know me very well, yet, he had such a positive impact on me and so many others.  I am so sorry to hear of your great loss.  May G-d comfort you and your entire family. Dear Mrs. Miller and Family,
I was a Consumer Safety Officer at the FDA Bureau of Foods in 1978 when Dr. Miller became its Director.  I had previously read many of his FASEB food ingredient safety reports and used them as a basis for food safety policy.  Although I was a foot soldier at FDA, I met with him often enough to realize that he placed science first in the development of food safety policy and pursued its implications with energy and enthusiasm.  When I later moved on to USDA, I also became aware of his JIFSAN activities.   I extend my deepest sympathy to you for your loss.

I hope to attend the memorial service on February 25.  In connection with that, I would offer my volunteer service to provide 15-20 minutes of live harp music prior to the service.  I play the Celtic harp and, although I generally play for happier occasions, I have played for funeral, memorial, and bereavement services.  Over the years, I have developed a repertoire of expressive, soothing, and meditative music suitable for such occasions.  For you and Dr. Miller, I would play gratis.  If you have other plans for music at the memorial service, they would, of course, take precedence.

I have just learned of your sad loss, and wish to express my gratitude for the wisdom and great wit Sandy generously shared with our Georgetown public policy graduate students as they learned in the Center of Food and Nutrition Policy.  Such a wonderful mentor and sage teacher, his students will continue to share his legacy.

Dear Judy,

Today was the first time I learned of Sandy's passing. As you know, Sandy was a very special person in my life. He was the Director of the MIT program where I received my PhD under his superb guidance. Later, he replaced me as the Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UTHSCSA. During the 40 plus years that both my wife, Rosemary, and I came to know Sandy, he was always gracious, friendly, smiling and willing to offer sage advice and counsel.There are not enough superlatives to describe Sandy and his positive impact on the people whose lives he touched.
I will never forget the gift of a silver key chain that you and Sandy gave  me from Shreve's upon graduation from MIT.  I still use it today. It was clear that you and Sandy were true, loving partners in his work and in life.I know that you must miss him terribly. 
Rosemary and I send you and your family our heartfelt condolances. I hope to see you at the February memorial service in Maryland.

Dear Judy, I am very saddened to learn of Sandy's passing. It was fifty years ago that I visited Sandy at MIT to review research progress under an Air Force Contract. Through the intervening years we worked together at FDA and had close contact while he was Dean at UTHSCSA and more recently at University of Maryland. His wisdom was always to be cherished. He was a steady force in pursuit of sound science for basing nutrition policy. He will be greatly missed.

Eva and I were sad to hear Dr. Miller's passing away.  He was my Dean at UTHSCSA.  We have worked together closely to build the Institute of Biotechnology for 10 years. His vision and support to build an excellent Institution was exceptional.  He will be remembered forever.

Dear Family of Sandy Miller,
I first worked with Sandy when I started as a Sr. Research Fellow at FDA and he was Director of CFSAN.  I was in awe of him then and have remained a great fan of his since then.  His heart was always in support of sound science and public health and he was so smart that it would only take him minutes to figure out what it took me days to do.  He was a giant in the nutrition public health field and his wise counsel and common sense will be greatly missed.

Judy and family:  I am deeply saddened by the news of Sandy's passing. You will recall the marvelous times that we had on the Pillsbury TAC in Minneapolis.  I really looked up to Sandy and served with him on the FDA Food Advisory Committee and on the International Life Science Institute Board. My condolences to Judy and all family members.  Sandy was a wonderful man who clearly loved his family and his work.  He loved to share stories and pictures of his grandchildren with me.  He was a brilliant man and he will be missed.

I knew Sandy for past the 20 years as an advisor, colleague and friend. I will remember him for his warmth, his wisdom and remarkable insight. Please take comfort that many people will miss him and remember him all of their days.

Dear Judy--

I knew Sandy as my Dean here at UTHSCSA and he was a member of the National Research Council Committee I chaired that studied the unintended consequences of genetically engineered foods for which we sought his expertise with the FDA.  He was always fair in his evaluations and seemed to have a deep understanding of problems and their possible solutions.  He was a happy person and his upbeat personality brought a lighter atmosphere into a room.

I am sorry to hear about Sandy.  I remember that he was very helpful in fostering my early interest in science and getting me started on my research career while i was still in high school.  I think I last saw him at a Passover Seder that you very kindly invited me to in Bethesda.  I will always remember him well as an important influence and one of my first mentors.
