
Shirley M. Kolack, PhD, beloved wife of Sol Kolack of blessed memory, mother to Nancy Kolack Winship and Richard Kolack, and grandmother to Joshua Kolack, Jacob Kolack, Rebecca Kolack, Rabbi David Winship, and Michael Winship, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 20, 2017.
She leaves a legacy of knowledge - teaching and mentoring hundreds of young people from around the world. She earned her PhD in Sociology and Anthropology from Boston University. At the University of Massachusetts Lowell, she was a Professor of Sociology and Department Chair. She enjoyed bringing international perspectives into the classroom, having traveled to Russia, China, Israel and India, while representing the best of the US education system abroad. She will be remembered for enriching many people's lives: students, friends, and family. She was a bold and brave woman, a trailblazer ahead of her time. She enjoyed exploring places and ideas that were not often available to women. Her spirit for learning and love of adventure will continue to live through her family and the students that she taught.
Shirley M. Kolack, PhD, was buried on Tuesday, October 24, in a private ceremony.
Shiva will be held from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Wednesday, October 25, and Thursday, October 26 at the home of her daughter, Nancy Kolack Winship, Cambridge, MA.
