

Solomon Berg died peacefully at his home of 55 years in Brookline on February 11 at age 85. He leaves his wife Jean (Hurvins) formerly of Winthrop, beloved daughters Jennifer Bittner, Susan Klein, Jessica Berg, and sons-in -law Erik Bittner, Rob Klein, Sasha Ostojic, beloved grandchildren Eliza & Ari, Nathan, Noah, Tova, Seth and Justin, dear sister Fanny Nemtean of Montreal, beloved nephews Dr David Nemtean and Dr. Ted Nemtean.
A long time urologist at Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, and Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Harvard University, he was chief of urology at Beth Israel Hospital and at the West Roxbury VA Hospital before opening an office for private practice on Beacon Street in Brookline. Born in Alberta, Canada, Sol graduated the University of Alberta and its Medical School, trained in surgery at the Montreal General Hospital before coming to Boston for residency in urology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Following residency he was Acting Chief of Urology at Tufts Medical Center. He was the author of a number of papers in urology, including pioneer studies of the use of injection of materials to cure incontinence, and the gene determining widespread incidence of urologic cancer among families.
His fine voice and love of music led him to enjoy his long time membership in Boston Symphony Orchestra's Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and to singing in choral concerts from Carnegie Hall to Canterbury, England. At 85, he still hummed Ode to Joy, in tune.
