It is with heavy hearts that the family of Susan (Sue) Schaufeld of Ashland, Massachusetts, announces her sudden passing on January 29, 2026, at the age of 81. She was surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of Jerry Schaufeld, with whom she shared more than 57 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Jay Schaufeld and his wife Michelle, Gregg Schaufeld and his husband Jonathan Kirk, and Laura (Schaufeld) Mitchell and her husband Corey. Cherished grandmother of Hadley Schaufeld, Elizabeth Schaufeld, Jillian Mitchell, and Caleb Mitchell, each of whom brought her immense joy. The loving sister of Alan Swartz and Jerry Swartz. Dear daughter of the late Jack and Anne Swartz.
Born and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Sue graduated from the University of Rhode Island, and went on to build a life rooted in family, service, and community. She raised her children in Framingham, Massachusetts, and was a special education teacher in the public school system there before running an afterschool program in Wayland.
A deeply engaged and caring member of her community, Sue was a devoted congregant of Temple Israel of Natick. She volunteered for many years with the Sisterhood of Temple Israel and gave generously of her time to Dignity Matters and Jewish Family Services of Metrowest’s Patient Navigator Program. At Cookingham Greene, where she lived, Sue was actively involved in several committees and was known for her kindness and fostering of community.
Sue found great joy in her daily walks, keeping fit, time spent by the ocean, playing canasta, cooking for others, shopping, attending theater performances, and museums. Above all, she treasured her time with her family and friends, to whom she was fiercely loyal and endlessly loving. She will be remembered for her warmth, her thoughtfulness, and the way she made people feel truly cared for.
A funeral service for Sue will be held on Wednesday, February 4, at 11 AM at Temple Israel, 145 Hartford Street, Natick, MA, with interment at Framingham Natick Hebrew Cemetery, located between Windsor Avenue and Fairview Avenue in Natick. Shiva will be held at the home of Jay and Michelle Schaufeld on Wednesday, February 4, immediately following the interment until 4 PM, and Thursday, February 5, from 7 PM to 9 PM.
