Toby Leighton, nee Tilly Liss, was one of 11 children born to Polish immigrant parents in Boston on October 1st 1921. She died gracefully on the morning of January 14th 2019, having lived the life of her choosing for 97 years.
She decided she didn’t like her first name so she changed it. She decided she didn’t love the man she was engaged to so she chose another. After 62 devoted years of marriage to her wartime sweetheart, Irving Leighton, she fashioned a new life for herself, made new friends and grew into herself.
She loved children and dogs and delicious food. She loved conversation, crafts and crossword puzzles. She loved her friends and her family. She was sharp and funny and pragmatic (Even in great old age, when most people dwell on the past, she was remarkably unsentimental), which equipped her well to manage 97 years of life’s joys and sorrows.
She will be missed by her daughters, Helena Davison and Lisa Leighton, her son, Bruce Leighton, her 10 grandchildren and her 5 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St., Brookline, MA on Thursday, January 17 at 12:30PM. Burial will follow at Boylston Lodge Cemetery, 776 Baker St., W. Roxbury.
