Dorothy Ann Brosnahan Powers, a longtime resident of Park Slope, Brooklyn, passed away peacefully at home on February 20, 2026, surrounded by her devoted family. She was 97 years old.
Born on July 9, 1928, to Peggy Hendershot and William Brosnahan, Dorothy was a true Brooklyn girl at heart. She was educated at St. Saviour Elementary School and Bishop McDonald High School, institutions that helped shape her lifelong faith and strong sense of community.
In 1951, she married the love of her life, Jack Powers, and together they built a home in Holy Name Parish, where they raised their five children. Dorothy and Jack were deeply devoted to their neighborhood and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Both were active members of the parish community, generously giving their time through countless volunteer efforts.
In 1978, demonstrating her independence and progressive spirit, Dorothy began a successful career in the business office of A&S Department Store. She greatly enjoyed her work there until her retirement in 1993.
Dorothy was the beloved matriarch of the Powers family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, taking immense pride in watching each generation grow. Her devotion to her family was steadfast and unwavering, matched only by her enduring love for her husband, Jack.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Jack Powers; her son, Robert Powers; her daughter, Patricia Powers Pusz; and her daughter-in-law, Valerie Taranto Powers.
She is survived by her sons, Alfred Powers, John Powers Jr., and Charles Powers; her son-in-law, Robert Pusz; her daughters-in-law, Virginia Greaney Powers, Teresa Price Powers, and Maureen Tobin Powers; thirteen grandchildren—Katie, Colin, Robert, Emma, Lauren, Kenny, Kyle, Taylor, Connor, Bryan, Kristen, Nora, and Maeve; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph, Lydia, and Robert.
