Edward W. Schloeman passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Ed was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. Ed was also a proud U.S. Marine, Vietnam War Veteran, and supporter of Veterans and first responders.
Ed was born in Brooklyn on September 28, 1942 to Bill and Christine Schloeman. He was the oldest of four sons. He met the love of his life, Judy when they were just teenagers. Ed and Judy went to the high school prom together. Upon graduating high school, Ed joined the US. Marine Corps. They were married in 1962 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. The newlyweds then moved half-way around the world to the Philippines, where their daughter Catherine was born in 1964. From there the young family moved to Hawaii until Ed was sent to Vietnam. Judy traveled back to Brooklyn with Cathy and another baby on the way. Ed returned home from war in October 1966 to finally see his family and his son Edward Jr. who was born in May 1966 while he was in Vietnam.
Ed got a job at NY Telephone Co. and worked many long hours of overtime to support his growing family. His son Robert was born in August 1967. Ed spent his career in the telecom industry and also joined the Air National Guard where he retired as a Chief Master Sergeant.
When Ed wasn’t working he loved gardening, fishing and golfing. His beautiful backyard on East 2nd Street was his oasis. He had quite the green thumb. We had fresh peaches and vegetables all summer long. When Ed finally retired, he devoted his time and passion to support Veterans and first responders suffering from PTSD. Ed himself suffered from PTSD and found relief through meditation. He founded a not-for-profit organization, Operation Warrior Shield that offered both training in meditation and specially trained companion dogs to Veterans. Ed’s work has been recognized by many organizations including the Mayor’s Office of the City of New York, the Brooklyn Borough President, the NYPD, the FDNY and the Marine Corps League. He has been interviewed by major news organizations and has presented seminars on PTSD to many organizations including the NYPD and the FDNY.
He is survived by his loving wife Judy of 63 years, his children, Catherine (Joseph), Edward Jr. (Tanja), Robert (Najia) and his grandchildren, Christopher (Grace), Michael (Lizzy), Luke (Veronica), Samantha, Matthew ( Ally), Mark, Hanaa and Nizar and his great-granddaughter Valentina Marie Schloeman born December 8, 2024 and his great-grandson Christian George Syslo born May 9, 2025, his brother Jim, sister in law Sharon and nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his parents and brothers Carl and Fred.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Operation Warrior Shield, 59 East 2nd Street Brooklyn, NY 11218.
Ed was a force that was larger than life. He wanted to change the world and make it a better place. He deeply loved his growing family and adored and cherished his beautiful wife, Judy. He will be missed every single day by all who knew and loved him. He truly was our HERO.
