Born in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy on February 18, 1941. Joe and his family migrated to America when he was 13 years old. While navigating the language barrier, Joe became a successful butcher. He opened his first business in 1968, at the age of 27, a well loved fruit and vegetable market that he ran with his wife Loretta. Eventually he and Loretta opened a card and gift shop. Later he became the proud owner of an Italian deli and in 1992 he finished out his career with another fruit and vegetable market.
For those lucky enough to know him, we knew the magic that he possessed. He had a way of making everyone feel like they were the most important person in the world. He was genuine and a truly rare commodity. He was a hard worker, a staple in our little neighborhood of Windsor Terrace. He was an active member of Community Board 7, having served as Vice-Chairman and Chairman. He believed he needed to be involved in order to help facilitate change in his community. He was at the forefront of the 197 A waterfront revitalization in Sunset Park. He was an advocate for building a new high school in Sunset Park and he worked tirelessly to see that it was built. For all of his hard work, he was the proud recipient of an Italian-American citation from the Brooklyn Borough president Howard Golden. Joe lived the American Dream. As an immigrant, he adapted to the life as a Brooklyn boy, never leaving the borough. It was his natural inclination to help people. Whether it was a local teen who needed a sponsor for their sports team, a family member who needed help, or a stranger, he never turned his back on anyone.
He leaves behind his beloved Loretta. They were married for 64 years where they built a life together straight out of a fairy tale.
Having both come from very humble beginnings, they worked hard and with their Midas touch they created a beautiful, well lived life.
He is survived by his daughter Gina and son in law Michael. He was a proud grandfather to Michael, Alyson, Lauren, Arianna, and Joseph III. He lit up when his great grandson, Elio Rose was born. Joe was predeceased by his son Joseph Longobardi Jr.
Joe will be remembered for his ginormous smile, warm hugs and sweet disposition. He was a proud Italian-American who loved to tell stories about growing up in both worlds. He will be missed beyond measure.
