She was born in Fiume, Italy (present day Rijeka, Croatia) during the height of World War II. As Istrians, Marisa and her family fled to Genoa, then moved to a resettlement camp in Bremen, Germany, and ultimately settled in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in 1951.
Intellectually curious since early childhood, her primary education in Italy served as the launching point for a lifetime of learning. Marisa earned various degrees in Accounting, Romance Languages and Architecture. Her love of Istria, and its people spread across the world, became her passion. She diligently put her talents to work meticulously capturing the culture, language, history and traditions of the Istro-Romanian people through a comprehensive internet portal, co-authored with her long time Australian colleague Guido.
Marisa was preceded in death by her devoted parents Enrico (Rico) and Giovanna (Nina) Iurman, her sister Bruna and brother-in-law Russell Anderson. She is survived by numerous cousins, extended family, dear friends throughout the world and, most of all, her beloved Schipperke Cherise and Cockatiel Paulie who meant the world to her.
Interment will be private at Green-Wood Cemetery with a gravesite service on Friday, June 27th 2025 at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to either the Midwest Schipperke Rescue (midwestschipperkerescue.org), or to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
