Corazon Gonzales Ortiz

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Corazon (Cora / Azon) Ortiz at 92, after a full and colourful life. She is predeceased by her older sister Perlita and younger brother Virgilio.

Born to Basilio Ortiz and Adela Gonzales in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, she moved to Canada in 1963, being among one of the first Filipino nurses working in Montreal, first at the Queen Mary Veterans Hospital, then at the Jewish General Hospital, from which she retired in 1993 as an O.R. nurse.

A graduate of the University of the Philippines – Phil. General Hospital – School of Nursing in 1954, she fulfilled a noble nursing career, starting at the Philippine Veterans Hospital then at the V. Luna Hospital in Quezon City as an army nurse. She then volunteered to work one year in 1959 with Operation Brotherhood in Vientiane, Laos. From there, she transferred to the Margaret Hague Hospital in Jersey City, NJ in 1961.

She was a long-time parishioner at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Brossard, QC where she was an active member of the Legion of Mary and the Catholic Women’s League. She was also active in the Filipino Nurses Association of Quebec.

Cora is survived by her younger sister Bessie in the Philippines, and nieces and nephew in Canada: Erlinda and Ofelia in Toronto and Raul in Brossard and her nieces and nephews in the Philippines: Concepcion, Benjamin, Rolando, Gloria, Adelita, Danny, Fely, Myrna, Nida, Elinor, Armand, Alan and many grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews.

Mass will be held at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church (7900 Naples, Brossard J4Y 1Z9) on Friday, October 22, 2021, at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers and to honour Cora’s devotion to nursing, donations can be made to the Jewish General Hospital Foundation (Montreal) in her memory.
