Carl was born in Walsenburg, Colorado, to Charlotte and C. William Benson. He was one of eight siblings raised on a large cattle ranch near Westcliffe, Colorado, where he forged a rugged work ethic, determined self-reliance and a love of ranching that would shape the rest of his life.
He worked as a cowboy in Colorado before joining the U.S. Army and serving as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. He met the love of his life, Brenda Steffenhagen, at a USO dance at West Point in 1967. They were married in 1968, and settled in Texas, where they raised two sons. They were married for 44 years before Brenda’s death in 2012.
Carl held many roles throughout his life, including work in agriculture, construction, underground utilities and heavy equipment. After graduating from Sam Houston State University, he became an industrial arts teacher, where he particularly enjoyed mentoring students about woodworking.
Carl was a true craftsman who had many talents and quiet passions. He enjoyed photography, gardening, rodeos and building or refinishing furniture. He took pride in the Brazos County home he built with Brenda and loved watching the birds and deer on the property. More than anything, he cherished time with family and friends and took great joy in keeping up with his grandchildren’s lives.
He lived his life as an example for others, with character, courage and a helpful spirit.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Dwaine Benson and Kim Wisner of Aransas Pass, and Darren and Michelle Benson of Bryan; grandchildren Brianna Benson, Dylan Benson and Ryan Benson; sisters Zara Reis, Char Starr, Alice Berry, Nan Sanders and Jane Reed; brother C.W. Benson; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
