Larry Don Merrick of Bryan, Texas passed away suddenly on October 10th, 2018. He was born January 3, 1952 in Los Angeles, California. His parents Donald P. and Eda M. Merrick raised Larry in California, along with his three sisters, Diana Derby of Wheelock, Texas, Cindy Ridens of Fountain Valley, California and Carol Emery of College Station, Texas. Larry’s love of the ocean remained long after he had moved away from California.
His first sojourn as a young man was with the United States Army, which he joined in October, 1970. He spent time stationed in Virginia and Massachusetts and was honorably discharged in May, 1973. After his time in the military, he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to start a new life. There he married Donna Phelan in 1976, and began a career as a draftsman. He raised two young children and enjoyed time spent cycling and hiking in the Sandia Mountains. After a difficult period in his life, he divorced, and moved to College Station, Texas in 2002. He found pleasure in time spent with his sisters, parents, and relatives. He also treasured time spent with his partner and friend, Marcella Young and her family from College Station, Texas. They enjoyed feeding the ducks in Central Park and watching old episodes of Johnny Carson.
Larry was preceded in death by his father Donald Merrick, his birth mother, Marilyn Pegram and his sister Karen Elizabeth Merrick. He is survived by his mother, Eda Merrick of College Station, Texas, his three sisters, and his children, Micah Merrick and wife Julie Norseen, of Mountain View, California and Christa Merrick, of Enola, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Evan and Kai Merrick, also of California.
Larry wrote a note 2 years ago on his computer. It says:
“To all who are reading this, please understand and receive the fact that I now have a new body and live in a place where there is no pain, obligations, greed, addictions, or anything even close.”
Dad...all of your family and friends deeply hope that is true.
Rest in peace.
