Evelyn was born at home on February 25, 1929, in Edge, Texas to Ancel and Mattie Neoma Duncan. She was the fifth of six children. She grew up during the Depression and World War II eras.
Although her early years were hard, they were rich in the sense that she had a large, fun-loving family of siblings and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She often shared her captivating stories about that period of her life.
She met her love and lifetime partner, Raymond, when they worked at Woolworth’s in Bryan and they married in 1946. Together, they raised four children and always stayed actively engaged in their lives.
Evelyn (Mama, Nana) was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who poured her life into her family. Her laughter, big hugs, good food and many creative endeavors were continuously bestowed upon her family and friends. She was a self-taught seamstress, quilter and welder. She took pride in the fact that she could sew up a dress one day and fix a leaky faucet the next!
Ray and Evelyn traveled extensively throughout the US, Mexico and the Caribbean. They often included their kids and grandkids on those vacations, especially the ones camping out near a river or lake. We will miss the many many birthday celebrations with her throughout the years.
She was a member of the Alexander United Methodist Church, Tabor, Texas. Through her active years, her spiritual growth continued as she engaged with the church community. She handed out many warm hugs and shared lots of delicious banana pudding with her church friends. In her later years, her comfort often came from listening to the old Gospel songs and reading the Bible.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; and her siblings, Pauline Spooner, Jewel Nash, Willie Ellen Melcer, Oley Duncan and Dorothy Carnes.
She is survived by her beloved children and their spouses, Janus (Kelly) Olive, David (Carmie) McCallum, Donna Reed and Vicki Hance; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 5, 2022 at Alexander United Methodist Church. You may livestream the service at facebook.com/memorialbryan Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church.
