Velma Lucille Hines Manthei passed away on March 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She wanted to live to be 100 but was 96 years 7 months 1 day old at the time of her passing. Velma was born on August 27, 1928 in Hogansville, Georgia to Marvin and Mary Huff.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband, William Albert Hines, who was the love of her life; her husband, Edward Manthei; her parents, Marvin and Mary Huff; daughter, Brenda Jane Norris; granddaughter, Brandy Hyvl; grandson, Brandon William Baker; great grand-daughter, Jasmine Graham; brothers, Billie, Robert, and Eugene Huff; sisters, Dorthey White and Betty Ann Barnes.
She is survived by her son Larry Hale; daughters, Glenda Hines, Jonell Speak, Joyce Hyvl and husband, Melven Fehler; stepdaughter, Brenda and Ira Harris and son, Chase; special daughter/grand-daughter, Betty Jean Gibson and partner Robbie Ball and son, Asa. As well as 14 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren.
Velma was a hard worker; she never stopped. She said hard work made you honest. Velma worked until the age of 91. Her passions were quilting, her family, her church, her friends, music and, last but not least, her yard. She loved to garden, to work in her flower beds and just being outside.
Animals were lucky when they met up with her. She could not let a stray go hungry, hence the cats that we are trying to find homes for.
Our Mom was a beautiful person. She would do anything for anyone. She loved surprises, Mexican food and going to Walmart. She did not meet strangers, and her friends meant the world to her. Don’t get in the way of the TV at 6:30 when Wheel of Fortune was on. You would pay.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderful team at Bluebonnet Hospice. “Doctor” Socrates was the most loving nurse. We can’t say thank you enough. To our nurse Jory, Granny loved you.
And thank you to all the other special people that made her last months comfortable. She was the matriarch of 5 generations of men and women who adore everything about what she stood on and represented in the decades of her cherished time on this earth.
