Dorothy Arlene Waldron, 100, of Glendale, Ca, passed away on the Fourth of July. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Bessie and Angus V. Young, on August 28, 1916. Five years later, she, her mother and step father, Charles Wright, M.D., moved to Lancaster, Ca, where Dorothy grew up on a farm. She played the C-Saxophone in the school orchestra and bit parts in numerous musicals. She graduated June 1934 from Antelope Valley Union High School.

After high school, Dot, as she was then called, relocated to Burbank where she worked in a private home as a caregiver. She married Leon Forrest Waldron on April 20, 1939. They had four children in four years including twins, and she lived out the rest of her life surrounded by family and friends in Chevy Chase Canyon, Glendale. Dorothy’s family owned and ran Sheridan Gardens Nursery which got its start on Sheridan Road in Glendale. She was a founding member in 1947 of the Chevy Chase Estates Garden Club which is still in existence. She and Leon travelled with their California Association of Nurserymen friends and enjoyed the many gardens of Europe, Asia, South America and New Zealand. She studied art history, music, and religion. A talented seamstress, Dorothy developed and wore a wardrobe of her own “wearable art.”

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband and two of her children; Darrell David Waldron of Glendale and Gloria (aka Allison) Graf of Pacific Palisades. She died peacefully in her home leaving behind Carroll Joyce Ropp of Glendale; Sterling Leon Waldron of Hollywood and over 50 grandchildren, including great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She will be missed by her beloved friends, family, neighbors, and caregivers. Even though she jokingly called herself a “desert rat” because of her Lancaster days, others call her a “great lady.”

A celebration of her life will be held on August 26th Valley Funeral Home in Burbank.

What a wonderful person Dorothy was! She was kind, smart and gentle. I was lucky to hear David's stories of growing up with your family. They are stories everyone would want to tell about their childhood. I only met Dorothy twice, but we exchanged Christmas cards every year and I knew there was something very special about her. Sending your family a wish for peace and healing.

Hi Carroll and Sterling and all Dorothy's family,

I saw that Dorothy passed and wanted to tell you how I was touched by her life. I grew up as your neighbor next door. She was a great lady, she was kind and generous. The gardens all around the home were maintained so beautifully, it was such a serene environment. I had a sweet tooth and knew if I visited she would always give me candy! Dorothy is probably responsible for a lot of my childhood cavities. Even today I put up a Christmas wall hanging that she made, it is of felt with bells. It gives me a chance to tell my kids about my childhood neighbors Dorothy and Leon! She really did make the world a kinder, better place.

With love,

Growing up with Grandma (and Grandpa) was amazing. I always remember being so accepted and loved. I loved going over to Grandma's house. She always had fun things going on for us kids. I loved talking with her. I was fortunate to join grandma and grandpa on their tour of the botanical gardens in Monaco as I was living in France at the time. That was a fabulous experience with them. Grandma and I always had great talks about the places we traveled and the gardens and flowers in those places. When we lived in Carmel grandma and grandpa would visit us. Those were such special times. I always knew they loved us. I loved grandma so much. She was an amazing woman who gave so much love and kindness and beauty to our lives. I miss you Grandma Dorothy and I love you . Thank you..

Though I didn't know her personally, she must have been so sweet. I am friends with Carroll and the late darrell and they are among the kindest people I know. Your family will surely miss her
