It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Arthur passed away peacefully on August 26, 2020, at the age of 92. Art will be will be greatly missed by his family, those for whom he built countless homes, his many friends in the Healthy Heart Program, and his brothers in the Masonic order.
Dad was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years Carol, his brother Albert, and lifelong friends and godparents to his children, Gordon and Muriel Bayliss. He is survived by his 4 children, Kim (Ian), Joanne, Brad (Lee) and Leanne (Chris) and three grandchildren, Jamey, Jordyn and Christina.
Arthur was born to Italian immigrants in Drumheller Alberta on May 10, 1928 as the eldest son of a coal mine engineer and rooming house manager, Manseuto and Vera Berti. The family moved to Lake Cowichan on Vancouver Island in 1939 to become the proprietors of a rooming house, “The Riverside Inn”, which they operated for 4 years, until they made a permanent move to Burnaby. As Dad was not school minded, he joined the workforce in a number of positions including making batteries and driving truck, until he was hired to work in the yard at Burnaby Lumber in 1946. Shortly thereafter Dad met Carol, and in 1955 they were married and began their family.
Dad spent more than 20 years in the lumber business eventually becoming a partner in Burnaby Lumber until the business was sold in 1968. Thereafter, in partnership with his father in-law, he began building custom homes and doing renovations, which he continued to do well into his 70’s.
As a builder, Dad embodied the era where your contract was your handshake, your marriage and friends were lifelong, as were your commitments being a member of the YMCA Healthy Heart Program for 43 years and the Masonic order for over 70.
Above all , Dad was a proud father who was blessed in marriage, and in the love of a devoted family.
In view of COVID, at this time the family is not planning a public service. In lieu of flowers donations made in Arthur’s name to the YMCA Healthy Heart Program are most appreciated.
