Born in Vancouver on July 2, 1926 Art was aptly named. Involved with many artistic endeavors all his life; Art began his journey early as a young child showing an artistic disposition and talent beyond his years. Mentored by a professional artist throughout his teens, he was the first person of Chinese descent to land a coveted position in the Art Department of the Famous Players and Odeon Theatres in Vancouver during the times of anti-Chinese sentiment.
Art found love marrying Jean Lee, his wife of over 60 years who predeceased him in 2017. Together they had a fulfilling life settling in Toronto where he used his artistic talents to open a retail business with his sister Florence (Peter) King. Together as family they established a successful business in the heart of trendy Yorkville and in tony Royal York. Upon retirement, Art and Jean set up an art studio in their home in Fonthill, Ontario and taught their own students painting as well as taking their time to enjoy their other pastime golf.
Preferring the quiet solitude of his personal studio than en plein air, watercolour was Art's preferred medium of expression. His passion was landscapes but he was known to dabble in portraits, still life, and floral. Art's work can be found exclusively in many professional offices and private homes.
Art is survived by his daughters: Tracy Lew (Gino), Natalee Quillian, and grandson Marshall, as well as sisters Florence King and Betty Nann. He is predeceased by his siblings: Chew, Chuck, Pat Lee, Henry and Beatrice Jai. In honouring Art's wishes, there will be no service.
The family would like to thank the staff at Crofton Manor for the excellent care and for the home he said he was lucky to have. We will be forever grateful.
