Benny Bing Yong Kwok

“Benny” Bing Yong Kwok passed away peacefully in the presence of his family at Royal Columbian Hospital on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at the age of 91. He is survived by his children, Corinna (Robert), Selina (Michael), and Trevor; his grandchildren, Christina, Bethany, Kenton, and Danielle; his siblings, Stephen (Grace) and Moneca; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Mei Wen “Marion” Kwok and older sister Wing Hoy Wong.

Benny was born in the Guangdong province of China in 1933. He immigrated to Vancouver, Canada in 1955 where he met his wife Marion. In 1962 they married, settled into their new home, and started a family. They opened the Cariboo Hill Grocery Store in 1970. In 1976 he tore down and rebuilt the Cariboo Hill Grocery Store to build a larger store with a family residence on top. This visionary design soon set the standard for many other stores in the Lower Mainland. Benny’s business acumen resulted in an additional store at Bridgeview in Surrey in 1980. He helped found the Fraser Merchant’s Association to help support small local grocery businesses and served as a director of the association. After selling his stores, he and Marion enjoyed their well earned retirement by travelling across Canada and the rest of the globe, including China, Hawaii, Germany, France, and Australia. After the passing of his wife Marion (January 2000), Benny continued his active lifestyle, enjoying ping pong, basketball, swimming, and ballroom dancing. In 2017, Benny moved to Derby Manor and enjoyed the many friends he made there. While his health declined in later years, his perpetual smile never failed. He was happiest when he was enjoying a good meal in the company of his friends and family. He leaves a legacy of hard work, business acumen, and a loving family. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.

The visitation will be held on September 2 between 7:00 and 9:00 PM at Ocean View Funeral Home. The funeral service and interment will be held on September 3 at 10:00 AM at Ocean View Funeral Home.
