Betty passed away peacefully on January 24, 2013 at the age of 94 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Christina and James Brodbin, the father of her children, Angus MacLellan, her brothers, George, Michael, Thomas, and sisters, Bridgie, Christina, Cecilia, and Catherine, and her infant daughter, Mary Colleen. Betty will be lovingly missed and remembered by her children, Christina, Angus-John (Sharon), James (Linda), Catherine, and Hugh; her sisters-in-law Eileen Brodbin and Jessie MacLellan; her twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was born in Cowpen Village, England in 1918, but immigrated to Canada in 1929 with her family. Life on the farm in Alberta was harsh in the 1930's. As her brothers were younger, Betty was relied on to help her father with the demanding farm chores during this difficult time. Shortly after her marriage to Angus, they moved to Vancouver which remained home. One of her passions was ballroom dancing, which she had learned as a child from her loving mother. After her retirement from the government at age 62, Betty volunteered at the Willingdon Hospital for 23 years, finding fulfillment in bringing joy and comfort to people in the later stage of their lives.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff and volunteers at the Al Hogg Pavilion, Peace Arch Hospital, for the care, comfort and joy they provided Betty, and to Barbara Kreigs for her warm and fond companionship. Prayers will be held on Thursday, January 31 at 7 pm, and a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am on Friday, February 1 at St. Helen's Church, 3860 Triumph St., Burnaby, B.C. Rev. G. Baggio celebrant. Internment to follow at Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army, the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund or St. Helen's Church may be made in her honour.
