Born on March 1, 1928 in Guangdong, China to Fat Fun Kwan and Wai Ying Kwan, Cary immigrated to Victoria, BC Canada in 1952. He married Grace Shook Hing in 1953 and started their family before moving to Vancouver in 1963 to start a new company, Top-Valu Food Products Ltd, which has supported multiple families and generations. He was a dedicated family man, successful businessman and active member in the Chinese community.
Cary was a long-standing member and leader of the Lung Kong Tien Yee Association in Victoria and Vancouver, attending and hosting many international conventions over the years. He was a founding member of the Chinese Social Development Society (CSDS) in Vancouver which promotes cultural awareness and social integration within the Vancouver community. Cary, along with Lang Wong and their wives were the driving force behind the development of the CSDS building at 499 East Pender Street which opened in 1983. Together with Yip Wai Biu, Cary also co-founded a Chinese Opera Club that promotes participation and involvement within the community.
When Cary retired at the age of 70, he continued his community service, pursued his passion for singing Chinese Opera and enjoyed more time with family and friends. Cary leaves a legacy of connections, collaboration and cooperation for the benefit of all. He will be remembered for his hard work, integrity, generosity and quiet leadership.
Cary is survived by his wife Grace; children Lillian, Douglas (Helen), Edward (Diana), Donald (Pinky) and James (Sandy); ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Dan (Leona), Tim (Patricia) and Arthur (Wendy), and many nieces and nephews.
