Never goodbye, only "until we meet again".  Your absence is painful, but the beautiful memories we have live on and on.  I will always see you in each and every flower that blooms.

(This is the short but moving eulogy for Maria, as delivered beautifully by her granddaughters Marina and Connie.)

Cosima Damiana Maria Petruzzelli was born in Loseto, Bari on January 20, 1932, to mother Francesca Carrata, and father Cosimo Pietro Natola. At the age of four, she lost her beloved mother to illness; and her older sister, Lena also passed away only a few years later.  In 1953, her father died. 

Although these huge losses left the young Maria with scars that lasted the rest of her life, she was certainly made of stern stuff, and she did learn to live on and enjoy her life to the fullest. Nobody loved a good story the way Maria did, and if it was an intriguing one, she'd sit there listening wide-eyed and fully involved until it was completely over. And if she was the one telling the story, there could be no questions asked during her recounting of it, and you'd have to sit there patiently until she'd said the last word.

In 1957, she wed her husband of nearly 60 years, Andrea, and together they raised three children, Nicola, Cosimo and Teresa, who, in turn, produced a total of ten grandchildren.

Maria always demonstrated a fierce loyalty to the lasting memory of her departed family members. Here in Canada, she lost her grandchild, Baby Anthony, as well as her two older brothers, Mike and Lino. 

And now, with Maria's passing, she has most certainly been reunited with her departed family members in the world of eternal rest, and we can only imagine what an incredibly emotional reunion this truly must have been.

She would often ask her grandchildren - You love Jesus? - It was no secret how much Maria certainly loved and revered our Lord and Saviour, and as we recall this very short passage from Luke:

Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise" ,

it's a sure bet that we can remain completely comfortable in knowing absolutely where Maria Petruzzelli now resides.

The viewing, the funeral, and the entombment ceremony all combined to form perhaps one the most moving rituals of passage that I have ever witnessed. Buon viaggio, cara Maria. Dio ti benedica.

Our condolences and thoughts go out to the Petruzzelli family. While Maria may no longer physically be here, she still lives on in the many memories she built, created and left for you.

Dearest Maria, you lived a rich and love-filled 84 years, and up until the very end, you showed amazing strength and perseverance, especially in your unwavering desire to be the wind who would direct your own sail. You were a formidable presence; a force to be reckoned with - and a force that will be so profoundly missed by all those you leave behind.

Rest in peace Nona, though your time here on earth was brief, you have touched so many peoples lives.  May you find eternal peace in Gods heavenly kingdom.

Maria, we loved each other as childhood friends, and then when we became  sisters-in-law, you instantly welcomed me as part of your family. I will never forget you, and I will always keep your spirit alive by recalling the wonderful memories we have shared together throughout our lives. God bless you, Maria. Rest in peace.

As each day passes since December 18th, the reality of losing you sets in a little deeper, and the massive void left by your quiet departure grows larger and larger. Bon voyage, Nonna Maria, and may God bless you for the rest of eternity.
