With shattered hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Derek Emil Meneghin on March 23, 2025. Born on March 4, 1976, Derek left us far too soon, but not without leaving an indelible mark on the lives of all who knew and loved him.
Derek was the beloved husband and soulmate of Samantha, and the fiercely proud father of Harrison (20) and Georgia (17), whose lives he built his world around. Derek was a steady protector, a guiding force, and the kind of dad who showed up—on the sidelines, in the stands, and in every quiet in-between moment—with his whole heart.
Son of Eva Meneghin and the late Emilio Meneghin, Derek was the second of four beloved brothers—Jason (Marla), Daniel (Jennifer), and Jimmy. He was a cherished son-in-law to Linda and Peter Harris and brother-in-law to Jennifer Harris. He was also a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews—Carley (Danielle), Aava, Jackson, Violet, Max, Leo, Beckette, and Grayson—who knew his warmth, humor, and that signature Meneghin mischief.
Professionally, Derek built a strong legacy in Finance within the Mining Industry, working with pride and integrity alongside colleagues at Alexco Resources, Hecla, and most recently Contango Ore. He was deeply respected by a broad community of peers across the mining world who valued not just his expertise, but his grounded leadership and steady presence.
But it was his community—our community—that Derek held most dear. He was a familiar and welcoming face to so many: from the hockey parents who stood shoulder to shoulder with him from early mornings with Semiahmoo Ravens and Delta Hockey Academy, to the proud roar of Junior Hockey with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and now with the Medicine Hat Tigers, where Harrison continues to play with heart and resilience. Derek was incredibly moved by the powerful embrace of the hockey community, and most recently, the support shown by the Tampa Bay Lightning organization. That sense of family and belief meant everything to him.
And just as Derek cheered behind the glass for Harrison, he stood as a protector and proud of Georgia—his brilliant, compassionate daughter—who continues to thrive at Elgin Secondary School. A dedicated student and a grounded, kind soul, Georgia reflects her father’s quiet strength and community spirit. Derek admired her determination, her empathy, and her unwavering sense of self. They shared a special bond rooted in humor, heart, and their mutual adoration for their beloved dog, Wilson—known affectionately by Derek as "Wiwi." The love they poured into Wilson was one of their many shared passions, along with their ritual of “lundies” in the garage and late-night Biscoff cookies—tiny traditions that held enormous meaning.
Derek loved a round of golf with his buddies, where competitive banter and belly laughs were par for the course. His fantasy football league was the stuff of legends—full of cheeky strategies and more than a little friendly trash talk. Among his most cherished friendships were those with Mike, Clint, JR, Bart, and Leon—best men at his wedding and brothers in every way that mattered—who shared life’s milestones with him, from the wedding altar to the everyday.
Derek was also, without question, the chef of the house—master of the prime rib roast, turkey whisperer, and creator of the best damn Caesar salad out there. Whether carving at the holiday table or flipping steaks at a summer grill-out, he brought care, humor, and flair to every meal. His apron game was legendary, ranging from festive Mrs. Claus fashion statements to the cheeky “Naked Chef” number that somehow made it into every gathering. He made sure everyone was well-fed, well-loved, and always laughing—because to Derek, food was just another way to bring people together.
Above all else, Derek was a man of connection. He was the first to reach out, to lend a hand, to build bridges between people. He knew that family extended beyond blood, and he nurtured every relationship—whether with neighbours, old friends, new acquaintances, or teammates—with the same sincerity and heart.
And at the center of it all, was Sam. His best friend, his constant, his forever love. The one he loved with his whole being. The one he dreamed with, raised a family with, and cherished with all he had. Every evening, without fail, he brought her tea and cookies—an act of love so simple and yet so profound. Sam will carry his memory forward surrounded by the arms of this extraordinary community, raising their beautiful children, holding close the family Derek loved so deeply, and continuing to live out the story they wrote together—one of love, loyalty, and infinite devotion.
Derek, your loss is beyond words, but your legacy will never leave us. We will honor you with big hugs, loud laughs, shared tables, garage rituals, and Biscoff cookies. We’ll cheer a little louder, love a little harder, and hold each other a little longer—all in your name.
We love you, Derek—forever and always. To infinity and beyond.
