Jean was born in Chilliwack BC, to parents Bertha Thiessen and John Schmidt, living near many other family and friends who were predominantly members of the German Mennonite community in Sardis.
She went to the University of BC and became a teacher, marrying Don Bedford, and staying home to raise two children, Gord and Carol Bedford (Cosco). When that marriage ended, Jean began teaching elementary school in Burnaby (as Jean Bedford), and a few years later married Ken Porterfield and acquiring more family with his children, Doug and Patricia (Trish). Jean's life and family expanded from there with 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
There were many wonderful trips and life experiences with Ken and her friends and family, summer vacations in Osoyoos, and a month long Christmas "season" of preparation and activities which were a culminating highlight of the year for many who attended the Porterfield Christmas events.
Jean was attentive to those around her and made them feel heard and supported. She believed in doing things properly, well and beautifully. She enjoyed very much reading, music (singing and dancing), and travel. Jean will be remembered in our hearts and sorely missed.
On May 24, there will be a Celebration of Life at the home of Doug Porterfield at 9491 222 St Langley at 12:30pm which will begin with a light lunch. At 1pm, we will begin a reflection on Jean's life and a sharing of memories, pictures and stories. An RSVP would be appreciated. Please bring lawnchairs if the weather is sunny.
