Born in Brandon, Manitoba on May 6, 1935, Gary Norvil George Bates (aka Ben) passed away in Maple Ridge, on July 3, 2024, at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife Leonie; his children Trudi (Jamie), Catherine (Grover), Barbra (Ron); grandchildren Carly, Chelsea, Danielle, Taylor, Scott and Jackson; and greatgrandchildren Greyson and Tyson, and his sister Lynn.
Gary grew up in Winnipeg Manitoba, where he played football as a young man. Gary worked for Safeway and after retiring he continued importing Chinese Mandarin oranges. Gary loved to travel, and saw many parts of the world. His Military Collection was his pride and joy, and he loved showing it to anyone who would give the time to listen. Gary rode a motorcycle, loved baseball hats, shoes, and animals. He would offer every dog he met a place to live in his home.
He married Geraldine in 1960, whom he had three daughters with. After a divorce, Gary later met the love of his life: Leonie Meneses. They spent 35 years together in happiness.
Gary could be described as a big ol' bear, who’s character would fill the room. He was smart & fun, and always had a big smile on his face.
Gary gave cancer a good fight. He was able to pass away in his home holding Leonie’s hand. It was truly a peaceful moment.
Celebration of life will be held Saturday October 26, at 1:30pm at St Luke’s Catholic Church. Please find details below.
