ARNDT, Gerd February 13, 1933-May 24, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerd Arndt, beloved husband, father, & “Opa”. Gerd passed away peacefully on May 24th with his daughter, Anita, by his side. He was born in Heimtal, Estonia to Theophil & Linda Arndt on February 13, 1933. He is survived by his wife, Elsie, 4 children-son & best friend, Martin, Trudy (Bob), Chelsea (Chris), Anita (Derek), grandchildren Joshua, Ingrid & Eoin, as well as brother Axel (Anni), sister Ursel & families in Germany & Canada. Gerd, as an adventurous young man, immigrated to Canada in 1954, where he met & married Elsie & happily raised his family in South Vancouver. He was a proud welder for Finning Tractor for over 25 years. A tragic industrial accident in 1979 left him with a traumatic brain injury at age 46. Gerd will be remembered for his unequivocal strength, his extraordinary will to survive, his green thumb, lending a hand & his devotion to his family. He lived in the moment, without complaint, filled with joy & gratitude. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Dr. Etches, staff at Crofton Manor, WorkSafeBC, Bayshore Healthcare & Connect Communities for their unconditional caring & support over the last 38 years. A funeral service followed by internment & reception will be held on Saturday, June 17th, 10:00 a.m. at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Traumatic Brain & Alzheimer Disease Research Fund at the VGH/UBC Hospital Foundation. Donate at vghfoundation.ca/donate, or call 604.875.4676 or mail donations. Condolences & tributes may be sent to the family by visiting www.oceanviewfuneral.com

Our condolences to Trudy and Bob and all their families. Although we briefly crossed paths with Mr. Arndt during his Sunday visits to Trudy's place, the stories of his strength to overcome life's obstacles was very inspiring. Knowing Trudy for almost 11 years as a friend and nieghbour, I understand where her inner strength and compassion comes from.
May God bless your family and may you find peace in knowing your father looks down upon you with love and pride.
