LOUIE – Henry Yuk Tong was born November 16, 1937 in Toi San, China. Henry arrived at Vancouver International Airport on July 18, 1949 at the age of twelve.
Henry spent his entire life in the service industry. Upon arrival in Canada, his father put him to work immediately as a dish-washer at New Chung King Restaurant in Chinatown. In 1968, he was hired on as a cook for Diner’s Rendezvous in Nanaimo, B.C. Three years later, in 1971, Henry started his own restaurant in Nanaimo, B.C., The Occidental Café; however, as plans changed in 1977, he moved back to Vancouver, B.C. Henry worked at multiple restaurants when he came back to Vancouver, such as Ho Ho Chop Suey and Delightful Foods Restaurant. Albeit, it was not long after, in 1978, that Henry opened his second restaurant, Green Mill Café, in partnership with his brother in-laws. Green Mill Cafe operated until August 1995 when the restaurant was forced to shutdown as the City would not renew their lease. After the Café shut down, Henry retired from the workforce. During his free time, Henry enjoyed boating, fishing, and playing mahjong with his friends and family.
In 2011, Henry unfortunately had a severe stroke which caused him to lose his speech and mobility. He spent the rest of his life living in a care home until he passed away peacefully on July 14, 2017 at approximately 6 PM.
Henry is predeceased by his loving wife, Nancy Suet Wan Louie.
Henry will be lovingly remembered by his sons (Stanley and Arthur), daughter in-law (Madeline), grandchildren (Andy, Sabrina, Brittany, Wesley, and Courtney), siblings (Susan, Winnie, and Lenard), and other family members.
The Memorial service will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 10 AM.
