Henry was born in Wuxi, China on June 13th, 1931. He grew up in Wuxi and Shanghai, as part of the extended Yung family, which had established a series of leading cotton and flour mills throughout China. In 1949, his family left China and Henry moved to the United States for boarding school. He later received his BS in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
He spent his early career working as a production engineer within the pharmaceutical and food industries. Henry then moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where his family had relocated, and joined his family business establishing cotton and flour mills. He later launched and grew an orange juice concentrate factory.
In 1969, he moved to Vancouver, Canada, where he began a second career as a real estate investor and developer. Henry was active in residential investments and developments in greater Vancouver as well as the western United States through the 1970s and early 1980s.
Henry then transitioned into semi-retirement serving on boards, spending time with his family, travelling in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, and working on his golf handicap. During this period, he enjoyed being part of a number of local communities including the Vancouver Club and the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club.
Henry’s final years were spent at the Opal retirement community in Vancouver, where he reconnected with old friends and met new ones.
Henry is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his children Fiona and Stanley, his grandchildren, Kiana, Tyler, Zoe, and Ella, his brothers, Walter, Kenneth, and Ivan, and an extended family of cousins, nephews, and nieces across North America, Brazil, and Hong Kong. Henry loved being surrounded by family and friends, and treasured a sharp outfit, a good meal, and a stiff drink.
A celebration of Henry’s life is being planned for the spring of 2026.
