Herman was a great neighbor.  He was so kind to my children.  He would throw vegetables from his garden to us from his patio to mine.  If I would catch fish boating, I would always drop some off.  It was a pleasure getting to know Herman.

I was so sad to hear of Hak's passing. I know how much he will be missed by his family and friends. I hope it brings them some comfort to think that he is reunited at last with his dear wife, Irene. I know that my Nan and Grandad, Sheila and Brian, will look after him in heaven too. Sending love to you all at this difficult time. K x

Herman was a lovely host when our family visited Canada on many occasions.  He always had some funny stories to recount over dinner, almost always at a Chinese restaurant as they were ours, and his, favourite kind of place to eat.
Over the years, both he and Irene (my Godmother) were frequent visitors to England and enjoyed visiting the English countryside and coast with us.  
I know we will maintain the links between our respective families which span the  last 80 years.  We  consider the Yuens  our 'Canadian' family; we may be divided by miles but our love and affection for you all is not diminished by the distance between us.  RIP Herman, as you are reunited with Irene.

Stuart and I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family. We will always remember all the many dinner parties we attended with both Uncle Herman and Aunty Irene at the Khoo’s and various family friend’s homes  over the years. Stuart and I fondly recall how amazed we were to learn that Uncle Herman would bring Aunty Irene her first cup of tea in bed every morning! My parents (Juliana & Chris Lee) were very saddened to have heard the news as they so enjoyed their company when they visited Canada.
Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

I met Uncle Herman through the many parties thrown by my Uncle Tony after I immigrated to Canada in 1975 (age 17). It seems like a blink of an eye and I have known Uncle Herman for over 45 years.
Interestingly enough, I found out later that he has known my mother's side since the 1950s as it was his parents that introduced Christianity to my maternal grand parents . So his sudden departure has saddened not only myself but my Malaysian aunts that have known him and his family. There was a period in the 90s when I had regular weekly lunches with him and Uncle Weng when we all worked in Vancouver.
Uncle Herman is classy, generous and articulate.
I will truly miss his smile, sense of humor, friendship and company.
RIP Dear Uncle Herman.

My first thought is that ‘Herman’ was a very classy person.  Always nicely dressed, shoes polished, well groomed, and always handled his social persona with style & grace.  If you wanted to spend time with a person who was well educated, well-travelled, interesting & pleasant to converse with, you would seek to spend time in his company.   At family gatherings, the feelings of family love & solidarity would permeate the room.  It is a testament to Herman & Irene’s parenting skills to witness the talent, honour, & principles that emanate from their four children.  That is not a lucky accident.  It takes time, attention & the setting of a good example every day of the process.  They gave their children all the tools necessary to lead a good and successful life.  You can’t ask for more loving & giving than that . . .  

Hak will be fondly remembered & greatly missed . . . 


Herman, I, and a couple of cousins  grew  up together sharing  many (mis)adventures in Kuala Lumpur until preparation for our future took us along different paths to different countries.  We met up again where Herman, Irene, Ban See and I would venture out savoring different restaurants with our families in tow.

I had to leave town for work until retirement some years ago.   Again we met up with a few khakis (cronies) for weekly lunch.  These lunches were spiced up with  incessant good-natured arguments about whose turn it was to pay.  I suspect Herman mostly paid up because he wanted to hurry off to buy grocery and braised pig stomach.  We would sometimes follow to banter with his friendly watch repairer who never quite finished with whatever repair he undertook. 
Herman, we love you and Rest in Peace, cousin!

Roland and I are saddened by the rather sudden departure of cousin Herman, and would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family. 

Herman lived a good life surrounded by the love of his close knit family, and will no doubt be greatly missed.  But.... Love never dies, and so the memories of his life and love will always live on in the hearts and minds of those who know and love him.

When we arrived in Canada as new immigrants back in 1978, Herman and Irene were there to make us feel welcome. We were often invited to their lovely family get together or a wonderful dinner at a fancy Chinese restaurant. We really appreciated being included and welcomed. Herman was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed. Cheers to you and Irene on your reunion!

Doreen and I would like to express our condolences to the family for the sad loss of a very dear friend and lunch partner.  We will surely miss his good jovial company and laughter.
