How Sau Cheng (How Sau), at the age of 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 16, 2025, at UBC Hospital in Vancouver, BC.
She is survived by her daughter Connie (Ken), grandchildren Lauren and Ryan, sons David and Edward (Brenda), two sisters, two brothers and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
How Sau was born in Enping, Canton, China. She was the eldest of ten children born to Cheung Kong Leung and Yuet Sin Leung (née Fung). She met her husband, Choy John Cheng (John, who preceded her in death in 1998), at school. Soon after marrying in 1950, to avoid the potential turmoil and hardships of the sociopolitical movement, the family left mainland China for Hong Kong, where they lived for a few years before John left for Canada. In 1956, at the age of 26, How Sau joined her husband to forge a new path in Canada, where she built a life filled with warmth, resilience, and generosity. The couple, together with John’s parents, worked together to build and ensure there was a stable foundation for their children/grandchildren. How Sau’s greatest joy was her family, and she found deep fulfillment in raising her three children. She later welcomed the cherished role of grandmother to Lauren and Ryan, whom she adored and helped to raise.
How Sau dedicated her life to the well-being of her family, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, selflessness, and tradition. She will be deeply missed by those who knew her, but she will be remembered, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
Family and friends are encouraged to leave messages of condolences, share memories and upload photos of How Sau.
