

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Keiji Shimizu. Keiji died of a heart attack at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC on June 1, 2011. He leaves behind Miyuki, his loving wife of 51 years, his sons Ray (Marcela), Michael (Kristin), and Arthur, his daughters Lisa (Mark), Marcia (Michael) and Julie (Jim), his 16 beautiful grandchildren Matthew, Miki (Kosuke), Aya, Daniel, David, Ryan, Kayla, Aidan, Brenna, Caelan, Ashlyn, Mia, Oliver, Saya, Jordy, Jamie, and his first Great Grandson Brooklyn. He will also be missed by brother Yoan (Toshiko), Sister-in-law Yoshie, Sister-in-law Taemi (Ichiro), Brother-in-law Toshio (Jun) and many nieces and nephews. Keiji was born in Fukuoka, Japan in 1926. He graduated from the medical department of Osaka University and received his PhD at Kyoto University. Keiji studied, trained, and worked throughout the United States and Canada before marrying Miyuki in Seattle, Washington in 1960. He made Canada his final home in 1961 where he practiced medicine for 40 years. His passion for the Japanese board game “Go” won him 2 Canadian Championships and 12th place in the World Amateur Go Championship in Japan. Throughout his career and after retirement he continued his love for Go by teaching and mentoring students. His interest in learning languages brought him to places all over the world including Spain, Italy, France, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Mexico, Japan, and Korea. He was a dedicated husband and father and loved his family dearly. His home was always open to friends and family. He touched the lives of many people and will be missed. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 7th at 1:00 pm at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby BC. At the wishes of the family, flowers and Koden have been gratefully declined.
