It is with deep sadness and great love that we announce the passing of Kevin Stock. He stoically fought cancer for five long hard years. Kevin lost his battle with this evil disease on June 26, 2022, at the early age of 54.
Kevin was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) 1968. His family moved to British Columbia when Kevin was about 5 years old and grew up in Langley. He attended Blacklock Elementary, then Brookswood Secondary and graduated from Langley Secondary School.
Kevin took a few gap years to work and figure out what he wanted out of life. He eventually decided to attend the University of British Columbia where he excelled in his studies with an emphasis on Environmental Monitoring. Soon after graduating, having never travelled abroad before, Kev took a long solo trip to Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, and India. He backpacked and stayed in youth hostels, every once in awhile connecting with his family in a time when there were no cell phones.
When he returned, he landed a job with the then Greater Vancouver Regional District as a park ranger at Derby Reach, Fort Langley. Kevin was a true enforcer of ‘leaving the park as you found it.’ No one dared pick the floral and the fauna to take home. He continued to work for the GVRD, now Metro Vancouver, as a chemistry lab technician where he met his wife, Vila. Kevin obtained his master’s degree from Simon Fraser University right at the busy time of welcoming to the world their twin boys, Julian, and Logan. Kevin then became a Pollution Control Officer with Metro Vancouver and eventually applied for the position of Senior Policy Analyst where he remained until recently.
Kevin was a board member of Help Burkina Faso Canada and was instrumental in the charity receiving its Registered Charity Status. He was proud of HBFC’s projects and delighted in helping the people of Burkina Faso thrive in their own culture.
There was shock and devastation when Kevin and his family found out that he had terminal prostate cancer. Eventually, in true Kevin fashion, he set to research everything there was available to fight the disease. He could have submitted white papers on the information that he collected.
Kevin was a true researcher in all aspects of his life. He wanted a koi Pond, so he researched every aspect of owning koi fish and set about to create a beautiful back yard complete with a koi fishpond, benches, yard lights, sound system and a propane fire pit surrounded by inlaid shale rock and perennials. All accomplished with extensive research and his own elbow grease. This same research went into renovating their whole house and establishing a hydroponic garden in a new greenhouse.
Kev loved to ride his Harley Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle. He researched and prepared and then finally embarked on an epic trip to Sturgis, South Dakota for the Motorcycle Rally In the summer 2019. He had a special bond with his Fat Boy due to this trip that he took while fighting his disease.
However, Kevin wanted to do some more touring on a cushier seat and so purchased his Indian Motorcycle which he named Red Devil, the slang term for chemotherapy. He had plans to tour down to Nevada but unfortunately, due to Covid-19 and then the progression of his illness, the trip was not to be.
Kevin was a dedicated husband and father. He loved his family and took great pride in his sons. As the boys grew, he and Vila introduced them to a variety of activities, sports, and hobbies so that they would grow to be confident, well-rounded guys. Kevin and Vila instilled the importance of getting good grades so to obtain a university education and succeed in their choice of profession. His boys are Kevin’s true legacy.
Kevin will be so very missed. He was a steadfast husband and father, dependable and loving son, and a beautiful brother. We will try every day to take comfort in our happy memories of Kevin and remember that he is only on the other side of the veil. We cannot see him, but he is with us. We all love you, Kevin.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.forestlawn-burnaby.com for the Stock family.
