Son of Late Gabriel Odegbaro Olaegbe and Mrs Alice J. Olaegbe. Beloved brother of David Olaegbe, Oluwole Olaegbe, Mrs. Fumilayo Iliyasu and Mrs. Esther Odegbade. He is survived by loving daughters Doyin Olaegbe, Funmibi Olaegbe, Nifemi Olaegbe, spouse and Victoria Jokotola Olaegbe.
As a ‘wild-child’ growing up in the 70’s, he always told the story of how he juggled going to school and helping his father on their farmland, skipping polytechnic classes and partying hard but still maintaining an all-star student status even daring to graduate with two degrees as an Upper-Credit Division holder. These anecdotes are always accompanied by a gorgeous smile on his face narrating how everything he attained was the direct manifestation of the self-promise to be a successful father in life. I am proud to say that his outstanding legacy; my sisters and I are a testament to the promise he made to himself. His wife and three daughters were his sole focus, and he worried over and took care of them until the end, most times to the exclusion of his own needs. Matthew was a joyous & pure spirit, he believed in the fear of God, family values and hard work. He valued and recognized loyalty, honesty, and authenticity. As an outstanding family man, he believed that everyone needs a helping hand, and was an extremely generous provider for his nuclear and extended family unit and almost everyone he came across. He loved music; especially Ebenezer Obey, Wasiu Ayinde and Yinka Ayefele. Whenever he visited Vancouver, he could be seen taking long strolls with his earphones in along “The Heights”, bopping his head, breathing frequent sighs of relief and appreciating nature and foreign people! He also enjoying trying new recipes by mixing and matching different soups. A plate of food with Matkay will leave you coming back from more!!
Matthew had an amazing sense of humor and the most handsome laugh! His charismatic demeanor, razor sharp wit was the perfect recipe for “a people person” in the sense of bringing people together to experience the good things of life and teaching them in his own sage ways. His favorite phrase was always “Father Lord, I thank you”. He unfailingly said this at sunrise and sunset. He made his wife and daughters laugh, feel comforted and well taken care of with his witty remarks, words of wisdom and constant worry. He was kind, generous and compassionate. Even when he spoke in anger, he was often the first to apologize and to try to heal what was broken. He believed in autonomy, dignity and a person’s right to choose the life they want. Although, he thoroughly disliked Lagos traffic, he struggled with the concept of laziness and was fiercely independent and very private. He loved his entire family, despite their quirks and colorful personalities. He worried about them, took care of them, protected them, and always kept on loving them.
Matthew will be desperately missed by all those that he’s left behind. Our hearts are so broken by this unexpected loss. He was one of a kind and to be loved by him was to be truly blessed.
