With profound love and cherished memories, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved matriarch, Mrs. Mee-Chong Ng, at the age of 97.
Born in 1928 in Miaobian 廟邊, Toishan 台山, China, to Yung Hou Lai 翁厚禮 and Yen King Kiu 甄瓊嬌, her early life was shaped by the hardships of a world in conflict. Though the Second World War limited her formal education to primary school, her brilliant mind and determined spirit shone through, as she consistently graduated at the top of her class.
In 1948, she married Fong Him Ng 伍宏欽 and began a new chapter in Tai Kam Tin 大金田, Toishan 台山. Together, they raised four devoted daughters. A woman of immense patience and talent, she mastered the intricate art of embroidery, a skill she later turned into a freelance career while living in Hong Kong for two decades, before the family immigrated to Vancouver in the late 1970s.
She was the heart of our family, a traditional Chinese woman who found her greatest joy in organizing gatherings and nurturing the connections that unite our family. We will forever miss the laisee 利是 and oranges she joyfully handed out during Chinese New Year and other festive celebrations. Her hands, which so skillfully crafted delicate embroidery and tended to her garden, were also quick to deal a winning hand in her favourite pastime, mahjong.
She had an adventurous spirit, eager to try new cuisines and travel overseas, including to Paris and England. Yet she lived a life of simplicity and quiet discipline, values which granted her the gift of remarkable independence until her final months.
Predeceased by her husband in 2002, Mee-Chong’s legacy continues through her four daughters: Rosetta (Hing Chin), Kitty, Elaine (Nelson), and Becky (Michael). She was a cherished grandmother to Jason (Janet), Karen (Tim), Brian (Carolyn), Kelly (Chris), Vicki (Rashpal), Vincent, and Monica (Brandon), and a doting great-grandmother to nine great-grandchildren. Her love and wisdom will echo through the generations she leaves behind.
A profound blessing came earlier this year when, through the persistent and faithful encouragement of her daughters Rosetta and Kitty, she welcomed Jesus into her heart. By God’s grace, she was converted to Christianity in January 2025, a testament to her ever-open and loving spirit.
The last months of her life were met with challenges, which she faced with remarkable strength and grace, bolstered by the loving and devoted care of her daughters. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Vancouver General Hospital, Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, and Windermere Care Centre for their exceptional kindness and professionalism.
Mee-Chong lived a long life filled with love, resilience, and the joy of simple pleasures. Though we miss her dearly, we find comfort in knowing she has entered a new journey and is at eternal peace.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mee-Chong’s memory may be made to VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation. Please see link below
